Today (May 11, 2006) saw the launch of the "promotional preview" BBC's high definition television service, and if you were hoping to watch Planet Earth (7pm, 27th May), or Bleak House over the bank holiday (8pm-midnight, 27-29 May) you may find this the most difficult new BBC service to receive in the corporations' history.

No matter if you have a high-definition television, you will need either a satellite HD box (from Sky, or from a third party), a non-existent DTT (aka Freeview or DVB-T) HD box AND live in London, or in selected places that were served by cable TV company Telewest until it merged with ntl.

When digital channel BBC CHOICE (now BBC THREE) launched on 23rd September 1998 it was a whole week ahead of Sky digital and a month before ONdigital but viewers could order the equipment for immediate installation and delivery. Sky claims to be installing HD boxes from 22nd May 2006.

Starting properly on 9 June, the BBC's World Cup coverage will be simulcast in HD, as will major Wimbledon matches, after which the HDTV channel will then show BBC drama, documentaries, events and music for just a few hours each day.

It is possible that anyone with a computer-based Freeview system (such as XP Media Center 2005) will be able to watch the HDTV. Please let us know!
