Briantist: "To replicate the previous analogue provision, Ridge Hill West will provide a dedicated D3-4 mini-mux carrying only the ITV1 West regional variant."

http://www.digitaluk.co.u….pdf

I think ITV1 +1 was added as well, though because of ITV's macro-region policy this is Wales rather than West (still different from the full D3&4 mux which carries ITV1 +1 Central West). Possibly it will eventually become West.

Nulling packets out of the full multiplex shouldn't be that hard, indeed you could probably just suppress the Programme Map Table for the services you don't want receivers to pick up! If you did that, all the actual vision and sound data would be received by the relays and you'd only have to add the PMTs back in. You could even carry the PMT data in a private packet that the relays knew how to turn back into the correct PMT data, though of course you run the risk that some badly-implemented boxes wouldn't interpret the munged data from the original transmitter correctly.

This does assume the transposer equipment is capable of a full decode and re-code and allows the transport stream to be modified between those stages.

Fun speculation, but probably not practical!

Mike Dimmick: Whilst I accept that you can do more or less anything with the datastream, what can be done practicably with off-the-shelf equipment is another question.

I would suspect that the whole of the D3+4 from Mendip is there, but they are just messing around with the NIT, which is just a basic index of services, because this is relatively static and straightforward thing to do.

The other alternative would be to decode ITV1 and ITV1+1 and re-encode them, which might be daft-sounds but might actually be easier to arrange with off-the-shelf kit and a few data cables.

I wouldn't really matter if ITV1 ITV1+1 got non-statmux re-encoded at 8Mbps as it couldn't have better picture quality than the source.

It would be my guess that they have not done this because someone would have pointed out that sticking BBC One West on there wouldn't cost anything...

Mike & brian.Ridge Hill West. Thanks for your thoughts, let me add a few facts. The analogue Itv1 west {ch30]now gone WAS indeed fed into a smaller mast panel at 5kw it was directional to north Glos where its performance was feeble ! That panel is now disused and may have a future life as cmty tv for Glos! The ch29 multiplex is described as a 'minimux' as it ONLY carries Itv1 west and no others [perhaps uniquely] as a direct feed from mendip. It will be fed at 20kw [upped from 5kw on 12-10-11] It is fed into the same high power panels as the 'central ones' . That is why its 'footprint' is the same as the 'central' multiplexes and why Digital Uk Postcode predictors show identical coverage for 'central d3+4' and 'west Itv1 d3+4' throughout most of hfds, north glos ,south shrops and west worcs. The current 5kw means a current lower signal than it will be from 12th Oct .As for the 'west' d3+4 carrying 'BBC1 West' in the future , Digital Uk spokesman took a sharp intake of breath and said 'No plans AT THE MOMENT' ! PS.Digital Uk predictors are yet to correct dates for ridge hill on some addresses from '2012 powered up' to the factual ' 12th Oct 2011 psb late power-up'

Briantist Ridge Hill West. Thanks for your interest. Just one final point, none of the Ridge Hill relays will be carrying Itv1 West, anyone wanting 'West' will have to 're-orientate' to Ridge Hill direct if they are able to .

Dar sir
I HAVE JUST RETUNED MY MOTHERS TV FOR HER IN COMPLIANCE WITH INSTRUCTIONS FROM OXFORD.WHAT MYSTIFIES ME IS THAT SHE RECEIVES LOCAL TV FROM THE WEST NOW. I DON'T KNOW WHY THIS SHOULD BE,I SHOULD ADD THAT SHE IS NOT CONCERNED BECAUSE SHE LIVES IN CIRENCESTER ANYWAY, BUT THE AERIAL IS DEFINITELY TUNED FOR OXFORD.

john martin: There are a couple of Sagem boxes on Digital UK's list of equipment that has a problem with the large Network Information Table as used from 2008 onwards. A symptom often is that some channels end up tuned at 800 rather than their correct locations.

http://www.digitaluk.co.u…tnit

If you have entries at 4 and 5 in the channel list but they don't work, it may be a case of Digital Region Overlap. Signals from Belmont could be strong enough to tune in, though I would expect that Freeview HD boxes should store the best quality or strongest first, and ask which region to store if more than one is found. (Belmont is counted as a different region to Emley Moor.)

Do check that you don't have too *much* signal, you're still fairly close to Emley Moor. See Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice for more information.

When retuning, do make sure you do a full reset as boxes may not store services they think they already have. All services change frequency at switchover. You will need to retune after 6am tomorrow to continue to get all services from Emley Moor, as it's completing switchover tonight. There should have been a leaflet or page in the manual of any box sold after 2009 explaining specifically how to do this at switchover.

M Gardiner: See Digital Region Overlap.

If the issue is that the box found Mendip before it found Oxford, this problem will still occur after the 28th, because Mendip D3&4 is on C54 while Oxford will be on C60. The BBC services should be the right way round - at present - because Oxford BBC A is on C53 and Mendip on C61, though Mendip will have to move, some time in the next couple of years, to a different frequency to release C61 for 4G mobiles.
