10th April 2013 retune for Winter Hill, Keighley transmitters and relays

To allow for the launch later this year of 4G mobile broadband, changes are being made to some digital TV transmitters. Many viewers in the North West of England (as well as parts of Yorkshire and the Midlands) will have to retune after 6am on 10th April 2013 to continue to receive certain Freeview TV and radio channels.

To allow for the launch later this year of 4G mobile broadband,
published on UK Free TV

From 6am on 10th April 2013, several multiplexes will change their transmission frequencies.

Notably the main transmitters will make changes. This includes the WINTER HILL transmitter, where the BBCA multiplex (including 1 BBC One North West, 2 BBC Two England, 7 BBC Three, 9 BBC Four, 70 CBBC Channel,71 CBeebies, 80 BBC News, 81 BBC Parliament, ) will move from C62- to C50 and the ArqivaA multiplex (11 PICK TV, 12 Dave, 17 Really, 29 E4+1, 32 Movie Mix, 46 Challenge, 48 Food Network, 62 TV Stars, 82 Sky News, 87 Community Channel,) will move from C61- to C49.

On the KEIGHLEY, BBCA will move from C61 to C49.

See below for a full list of transmission masts that will make changes.

When you now rescan, you MUST do a "first time installation" or "factory reset" scan, not an "add channels". Do the procedure you did on September 30th 2009. If you can't recall what this was, please see List of manuals for Freeview retune, or try the generic clear and rescan procedure.

Please note that the relay transmitters will take some time (between 11am and 4pm) to come back to full service:

Austwick: PSB2 C49 to C39
Bacup: PSB3 C50 to C40
Birch Vale: PSB3 C50 to C40

Whalley: PSB3 C50 to C40
WINTER HILL: COM5 C61- to C49 PSB1 C62- to C50

The changes at WINTER HILL will cause the following relays to have no PSB1 service for some time:

The changes at KEIGHLEY will cause loss of PSB1 for some time at the relays at:

Keighley Town, Oxenhope, Skipton Town and Sutton In Craven

If you get Freeview from these masts - DO NOT retune your Freeview equipment.

Wayne Kelly: You should try temporarily installing the upstairs box on the downstairs boxes aerial connection followed by giving it a retune, should the problem still exist then carry out a "factory reset" on the box followed by carrying out another rescan.

By the way "factory reset" is sometimes called "default setting" or "first time installation" on some boxes although they basically all mean the same thing, but if you select any programme that gives you an option of "format" then do NOT select this, because if you do it will delete all of your previously recorded programmes.

Are the upstairs and downstairs aerial points fed from a two way powered splitter?

I'm in Preston receiving from Winter Hill and since the transmission frequency changes, I'm experiencing much poorly quality of reception. It wasn't perfect anyway as I am only able to receive from a portable wideband aerial due to living in Halls of Residence at uni.

BBCA multiplex was always the strongest/most reliable of any, now I'm getting picture break up/pixelisation and audio drop out.

ArqivaA multiplex is just as bad, if not worse, Challenge became unwatchable at one point, I've never had issues before!

I'm not happy at all, I didn't spend £160 on my Freeview+ box and later £450 on my Freeview HD TV only for it all to be rendered virtually useless coz the Government and all it's Communications departments to screw Freeview viewers over because it wants to roll out 4G for mobiles without even testing it fully or knowing the full consequences of it.

I have no other options for TV other than Freeview due to the building I live in, cable or satellite isn't an option!

If it doesn't improve over the next few days I will cancel my TV Licence and will go to court if necessary, why should I pay for a poor service!

Mark Morris: You are not paying for a service. You are paying for the right to view television broadcasts, and not the availability of such signals using your chosen aerial.

I would suggest that it is down to your landlord to provide a TV aerial connection. Is it normal that students don't wish to watch television? Why isn't there an aerial system in the building?

I've also just checked my signal quality/strength; BBCA on ch50 = Quality 0 - 8, Strength 54 - 58; ArqivaA on ch49 - Quality 9 - 23, Strength 62 - 66.

Compare that to D3+4 (ITV, CH4, CH5 etc) on ch59 Quality 48 at it's lowest, average 53 - 68, up to 78 at it's peak, Strength a constant 58, I have no issues with picture/audio breakup at all on D3+4!

Oh, people who cannot get BBCA, I had to do a manual scan on ch50 to get the BBC channels, if that helps. Some devices do a "Network scan" which if you select any of the known channels for that Transmitter, e.g. ch50 at Winter Hill it will scan all channels transmitting from that transmitter and will eliminate cross transmitter scan results; when I lived in Lincolnshire I could pick up both Belmont (the local news transmitter) and Waltham (Nottingham/Central) so I always did a manual with network scan to only receive the Belmont transmissions.

Dave, I'd argue that BBC have a financial investment in Freeview and therefore are partly responsibly for standard of transmissions, otherwise what was the point of pushing Freeview as the analogue replacement is it's not up to the job. But I fully understand what you are saying.

Regarding the uni halls, the uni has an Internet TV system that can be gained through the uni's network that is installed in all the rooms, so their argument would be we're providing you with an option, but I'd rather not watch TV on my laptop on my knee! Never mind not being able to record stuff on Series Link when I'm out or away. To be honest I don't know anyone who watches TV on their IPTV system.

I've seen this building has several TV aerials, I might just buy a load of coax and borrow a rather long ladder, hehe.
