My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

Joe: If the two Sky+ boxes are from the same dish then that suggests that there is a problem with the cable or the "F" plugs connectors on the end of.

Try swapping the "F" plugs over on the box with the problems as its LNB1 that's used for normal viewing and I suspect that the problem you are having is caused by the lead that's presently in LNB1 position, so if you change them around and the picture return that would verify this or not as the case may be.

Try it and give an update.

maureen williams: You do not, and should not, require to alter anything regarding the settings on a Sky box, and if you find that the 430n does not work then try it on the dish feed to the other box in the living room, if though it doesn't work there either then the boxes power unit has most likely failed, NOT exactly an uncommon thing to happen on a box of that age, and so you should keep your eyes open for another second hand one as there are copious supplies of them around.

By the way the Prima box is an old analogue type and is useless nowadays for reception, most of them having been binned.

jb38,Hi ok hands up i was silly, have tried digibox on aerial downstairs, box does work, hooray, butttt have just realised i have two dishes.when some months ago i asked aerial supplier to connect sky to extension he fitted new dish!!The one i am trying to connect to is a more recent dish installed by sky and has a sky plus hd connected, this is what he attached cable to for extra bedroom.I wanted to test 430n on this but quite frankly, ido not know which cables to use as there are two inputs.the box definitely works, can you please advise me which cables from the sky plus hd i can test it with.maybe it could be the cable from dish?As 430n works i may as well use it till it dies if i can

maureen williams: As far as the dish is concerned, if you have (or are getting) Sky HD then two of the leads will be used, but these leads are all of equal status and are absolutely identical to each other as well as being electrically independent, so you can use anyone you want for a test.

JB38,Thanks for advice, have now tested dn430,on dish with sky plus,it works, the sky man fitted the cable from old sky system to new system (quad?) so i could run it to bedroom, the cable worked fine before.Could the problem be with the cable to quad?I really have no idea what to try next.Your advice would be much appreciated.

maureen williams: If you have tried the 439 on the lead from the quad block that is used to feed the Sky+ boxes LNB1 input and it works, then there is no reason whatsoever for it not working on any of the other three feeds from the quad LNB unless either (1) that the outlet port on the dish is defective, or (2) that a single strand of the coax's braiding wire has got accidentally wrapped around the inner core of the coax when the "F" connector plug was being screwed on, so you should carefully unscrew it and look at it closely to make sure that this hasn't happened, although as you will obviously appreciate that this can happen on the one at the other end of the cable, and of course Murphy's law usually dictates that this problem is more likely to happen on the "F" connector at the less convenient location, namely the dish end.

If you could just clarify on a point though, is it the case that the old Sky dish completely out of the equation?

jb38,the old dish is still there being used in extension, this was first dish i tested on.Sky man connected cable on new quad on other dish for sky plus,as i said i have tested here as well, all ok.Will recheck f connector in bedroom first, then wait for it to stop raining and check quad.Is it just a matter of pulling connector out and checking?Sorry to be a pain, guess its easy when you know how. Thanks again.
