My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

melanie: Satellite reception does not suffer from the multitude of problems that can affect Freeview reception and a "no signal" warning on a Sky or Freesat box can only be caused by a very limited number of reasons, the difficulty being that only about two of them can be checked by the viewer unless they are technically inclined.

Being unaware as to what Sky has requested you check, but press "services - 4 - 6" and look if anything is being indicated on the strength / quality level bars, and if anything is seen then it "has" to be at a minimum level of around 60% or so to produce a picture, as anything under this level suggests that the dish is slightly out of alignment.

However if nothing is seen then the dish could be well out of alignment, or that a problem exists with the coax from the dish or the "F" connectors used on either end of, especially at the dish end as far as water having possibly entered the connector as that will kill the signal.

Anyway, try the signal level check first then dependant on results further info appropriate to what has been found can then be given.

You could maybe also mention if you have a standard Sky box or a Sky+ / Sky+HD type, and if the latter the model number of.

dorothy twentyman: Plus to that requested by Mark Fletcher, are you referring to Freeview via a normal aerial, or is it Sky or Freesat via a dish?

a.m.bourne: The cause of this problem is nothing to do with the box but the dish, as its either slightly out of alignment or water is entering the "F" connector plug on the LNB.

On the Sky box press "services - 4 - 6" and check what the signal strength / quality is sitting at, as it "has" to be around 60% (equivalent of) to avoid the problem you are experiencing, if its less than that then the dish is a fraction out of alignment in its horizontal plane, a slight nudge to the left or right of the side of the dish usually correcting the problem, albeit this being a slightly crude method.

If though the signal is well above the level mentioned when the reception is OK then the "F" connector will require to be unscrewed from the block, and then further unscrewed from the coax so that it can be dried out should this prove as being necessary,

Thereafter the options are: 'subtitles' or 'favourites' or 'Man Tec' or 'Other Channels' or 'Tel Num' or 'Customise' or 'Help' but nothing suitable that your advice to press 0 then 1.

Georgina: "If" you are using a Sky HD box then use the following procedure.

Satellite signal check

You can check the strength of your signal using your Sky remote control:

1... Press services on your Sky remote control and you will see the main
menu with Options highlighted.

2... Highlight the Settings menu using the right arrow button and press select.

3... Use the left/right arrows to scroll to Signal and press select.

4.. The grey bars displayed will show you the strength of the signal to your Sky+HD box.

If this still doesn't work then please give the model number of box you are using.
