My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

robert sprott: The posting I just sent (accidentally) to Donald Hindley @ 3.29PM was actually intended for you, DH having asked a similar question under a different main heading and which I had edited the reply to suit your particular query.

Margarida Lima: If you are using a standard Sky box press "services" - 4 -6 and check what the signal strength / quality levels are showing as, if less then 60% (equivalent of) then the dish requires slight realigning, this usually in the horizontal plane, left to right.

If you have a Sky+ box then press "services" and you will then see the main menu with "options" highlighted, highlight the settings menu using the right arrow button and press select, then using the left/right arrow buttons scroll to "signal" and press select, this will then display the signal level indicator bars.

Further info dependant on results.

Margarida Lima: If you do not see the signal levels being indicated on any of the boxes twin tuner inputs, which by the way are independent of each other, then that suggests that the dish has moved out of alignment more then the "slightly" as was previously mentioned, and so this will require to be checked out.

However there is a couple of tests that you can try, the first being to disconnect your box from the mains supply then reconnecting it again "after" waiting for about 30 seconds or so, then letting the box go through its usual set up procedure.

The second thing to test is that the LNB settings are still OK using the following procedure.

LNB checking - reset on a Sky+ HD box

1:- Press services on your Sky remote control and you will see the main menu with "Options" highlighted.
2:- Highlight the "Settings" menu using the right arrow button and press select.
3:- Press - " 0 - 1 - Select " to access the Installer setup menu (this menu is NOT listed on the Settings menu options).
4:- Press select to see the Setup menu displayed with Hi and Lo band frequencies highlighted.

The correct LNB Set Up values should read:

LNB Type: Standard
1:- Low Band LO Frequency: 9.75
2:- High Band LO Frequency:10.60
3:- LNB Power Supply: ON
4:- 22 KHz Command: ON

Press the red button to reset them to default values even although they may
already be indicating them.

Then finish by pressing select or Sky to return to normal.

If this does not bring any results then its either the dish alignment problem mentioned (most likely) or its the box that has developed a fault, this easily checked should you be on friendly terms with anyone local that also uses Sky and it doesn't require to be Sky+ HD either, as if its only a standard Sky box with a single input then that is enough to verify the box is OK, just use the single input on the boxes LNB(1) socket.

I have sky box running into a global amp in the attic and from there feeding 2 magic eyes in 2 seperate bedrooms, theses both worked fine for a long while but since the other day 1 of the bedrooms isnt getting the sky signal properly. As in almost nothing but v slight picture then off again. I already swapped this connections port up on the amp but its same. i thought it coukd be the cable but its bringing in the freeview n rest of annalogue channel through ok, the only one not coming through right is the sky signal from amp to magic aye .. the other bedroom is fine so its not the amp either. any ideas ?

Scott: If swapping the connections port on the amp made no difference then did you try swapping the magic eyes over? or if this makes no difference either purely for a test temporarily using the Sky boxes RF1 output and by-passing the magic eye altogether.

By the way, the reason for using the Sky boxes RF1 for the test is just in case your TV's aerial input circuit short circuits the 9 volts that's used by the magic eye, the eye obviously not isolating the TV when removed for the test.
