The current Freeview transmissions are at low power and restricted to the main transmitters to prevent interference with the existing analogue signals.

If the Freeview signals were increased in power, then many people watching on analogue would have their reception degraded.

At switchover, the analogue signals will be replaced by digital signals at (more or less) the same power. This will allow the same proportion of homes to be covered by digital signals are currently supplied with analogue.

As over 1000 transmitters have to be upgraded for switchover to happen, this will take several years to complete.
