Our digital signal for ITV has disappeared in the last week -
published on UK Free TV

Sometimes people experience problems with the ITV/C4 multiplex (and also the one that carries five) because of the different transmission mode that allows more channels to be carried, but reduces the effective signal strength.

Freeview modes

This can sometimes cause problems when the weather changes (due to the inversion effect).

If you rescan for channels on your box and don't get the ITV/C4 services restored, then you may need to get a new Class I aerial to get reception all the time. However, you should check your cables and connections are in good order first.

dave: This can happen where the receiver runs out of memory. When the automatic tuning scan is run, it scans from low frequency upwards.

Should this be the issue here, then it is probably the case that the scan has picked up signals from other transmitters (those other than the one the aerial faces) and that the desired ITV/C4/C5 signal is picked up last.

Without knowing your location or which transmitter you are using, it is impossible to suggest whether this might be a possible cause. In the case of Winter Hill, for example, all its frequencies are high up, with ITV/C4/C5 being the highest.

If you are using Winter Hill then try having the aerial lead unplugged for the first half of the scan so as to prevent it from picking up and storing any signals in the first half.

thanks dave for your comment

not sure what you mean by " the receiver runs out of memory" as its a receiver only not a recorder? and this never happened prior to 10/4/13

my machine is a philips
my area is north west winter hill

which when i tuned it in prior to 10/4/13 it used to select the itv cluster from the north west
but since the 10/4/13 it selcets the itv cluster from wales and stores it in the channel list for as long as the machine stays turned on but when its turned off the the itv cluster only is lost from the channel listing

i have found a quick way to retrieve the lost itv cluster and thats by selecting manual search and typing in channel 59 this search for the north west itv cluster only and stores it in the channel listing for as long as the machine stays turned on but again when it is turned off the itv cluster is lost.

if this was a problem that I alone was experiencing then i would guess the machine is broken, however im not alone here and the start date for this problem seem to be all in and around the 10/4/13.

the other tvs and freeview tuners and cables are all working fine as far as the itv cluster retention issue are concerned

has anyone cured this issue yet ? if so please share !

has this additional information helped you dave in solving the mystery ?

regards
dave

DAVE: Dave Lindsay is referring to the memory capacity of the boxes "tuner" irrespective of what its used in, and which brand dependant can vary in the maximum number of channels they are capable storing, and if the maximum is exceeded because of more channels having been picked up than the memory can hold they are only retained so long as the device is kept powered, because once not by being switched off they will just drop out.

Excessive channels being picked up is usually caused by more than station having been picked up or multiple scans having been carried out without the equipment having been "factory reset" between each, this also called "default setting" / "first time installation" or "reinstall all services" on some Phillips devices.

DAVE: As jb38 says, I'm referring to the memory that the tuner/receiver uses to 'remember' the channels.

As the automatic tuning scan runs from low frequency upwards, or to put it another way, from UHF channel 21 to 69, it will find the lowest ones first. As Winter Hill's are all at the top end, and indeed its ITV/C4/C5 is the highest then they will be the last to be found.

What you're describing suggests that the tuner's memory is full by the time it gets to scanning ITV/C4/C5 on C59.

The workaround, therefore, is to prevent it from picking up broadcasts on the lower channels, which are coming from other transmitter(s) that you don't use. Pulling the aerial out for the first half of the scan is one such way of achieving this as you know that Winter Hill's channels are in the second half.

thanks for those comments

i did a first time installation to clear everything out of the channel list
and pulled out the ariel for the first 50% marker the first half of the search then plugged it back in for the 2nd half
and it was a disaster in so much as
i had no bbc programmes at all in the channel list also the itv cluster were still lost when i turned off the machine.

so i did another first time installation
and have all the channels back but again when i turn it off i lose the itv cluster?

dave: The lack of BBC programmes may have been because the aerial lead was out when it scanned the UHF channel for those services. The availability of manual tuning allows you to add missing channels, where they haven't been picked up during the automatic scan. From Mendip, channels are, in order:

48 - COM4: ITV3, 5USA etc
49 - PSB1: BBC standard definition TV and radio
52 - COM6: Film4, Yesterday, ITV4, 4seven

Perhaps there is only one other thing you can do and that is a factory reset. The thinking here being that there is some remnant left in the tuning memory that is causing this outcome.

Maybe knowledge of the model number would allow us to see if others have reported the same issue on the internet. They may have indicated how they successfully resolved the issue.

dave: See here for some other people with the same issue:

philips DTR210/05 losing channels - Google Search

Does this answer your question, or is this what you have already done?

DTR210/05 Digital Terrestrial Receiver - Philips Support

Another possibility is to run the automatic tuning scan (first time install, or whatever it's called) with the aerial unplugged. If this successfully wipes what's stored, then use the manual tune function to add the five channels and do it in the order given below:

(My apologies, the channels I gave above are for the Mendip transmitter.)

These are for Winter Hill:

50 - BBC
59 - ITV
58 - ITV3
49 - Pick TV
55 - Film4

By storing them in this order, see if any channels are forgotten, and whether it is still ITV/C4/C5 or whether it is the last one you stored (Film4 etc).
