My ITV/C4 Freeview channels have disappeared - what can I do?
published on UK Free TV

It is a feature of television signals that they can be effected by the weather. Aside from the obvious damaged that can be caused by wind or torrential rain, the onset of summer can cause a more intriguing problem called "inversion".

Basically, when the sun heats up the land, the hot air can get trapped below cold air at high level. This creates an "inversion layer" which acts like a polished mirror to TV signals. This causes two problems: you can receive both the original and a reflected signal from your own transmitter (on analogue TV this appears as "ghosting") or interference from TV transmitters that are normally too far distant.

The ITV/C4 multiplex of channels (ITV-1, ITV-2, ITV-3, ITV-4, CITV, C4, More4, E4, Quizcall) use a transmission "mode" called 64QAM, and it is sadly much more prone to these problems.

So, whilst a loft-mounted aerial will provide reception at some time, it will fail at others. The only real solution is to mount the aerial (or a new Class I aerial) outside on a pole, but some people report that changing the cable from the aerial to the set-top box to the high-grade satellite cable can also help.

The SCART connection, by the way, only carries a single TV picture, not the Freeview transmission multiplexes, so if this is disconnected it will result in degradation to every channel at once.

No other channels are listed apart fom 9 ITV channels !How can this happen? Any ideas please?

Retuned as requested and can now only receive BBC channels (the 26 channels on digital channel 50). Nothing else available, despite attempting manual tune on lost channels. In Manchester, so signal provided by Winter Hill transmitter (M19 1 postcode). Any ideas?

Charlotte: Carry out a "manufacturers reset" on your TV or box prior to retuning, this also known as "First time installation" / "Default setting" etc.

I retuned our freeview system the other day and now we have lost channels 3, 4, 5, 6 and 14. My mother watches these channels the most.

I have tried retuning and reset the system to factory default. We are using an indoor aerial but we could get all the channels before the retune.

We leave in east Anglia postcode NR6.

If anyone has any solutions please let me know.

Thanks

Ballymena

I live in the centre of Ballymena and had great Freeview reception until I re-tuned as instructed on Wednesday 3rd September.
Now I try re-tuning several times a day but always get no signal, and instructions to attach the TV ariel which of course is already attached. So I have absolutely no channels.
I have a smart TV so I can watch Netflix using the internet connection but
I really miss the normal TV channels.
I have looked at the map of N. Ireland and it says there are no problems with masts in Northern Ireland.
So I just don't know what to do. Is it going to be fixed or do you give up and get cable.

Shirley Please look at the page shown at A bakers dozen of changes: Freeview channel number changes from 3 September 2014 | Freeview news | ukfree.tv - 12 years of independent, free digital TV advice and follow the retune instructions. You may need to refer to your TV's User Guide to see how to get to the 'new install' settings.

John B: Try retuning to the correct transmitter. You can check which one it is by putting your postcode into this website, and then following the various links. If you've a rubbish Goodmans box like mine, its probably found the wrong transmitter, on a lower RF channel. They do not manually tune.

Since the update on Wednesday my BBC channels freeze - have retuned the box numerous times to no avail. It's a Goodmans box, and the postcode area is AB25. All the other channels are fine. Does anyone have any ideas to help, please?

Isla: I'm having the same problem, although it started happening weeks ago (and apparently I'm not the only one, judging by both this site and some reviews : http://www.sainsburys.co.…ml). Could be a software glitch. I've had no luck on the net finding any sort of advice, certainly not from Goodmans. Whatever you do, dont retune, once you've got a decent signal. The blessed thing does not manually tune, and its a pain trying to find the right transmitter. Its certainly not going to prevent the freezing up. I'm afraid I really dont have any solotuions, You could check the signal strength, and what channels are prone to freezing. I'm going to contact the BBC, since those channels seem to be the worst for freezing, but other than that, I think the best thing to do is to buy something else! I know thats what I'm thinking.
