To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Bernadette Newby: Why do you "have" to retune? What are the symptoms??? You are leaving us to guess by keeping us in the dark!

There are quite a few complaints of receivers, particularly Philips ones, 'forgetting' channels when they are powered down? Is this the case here? I guess that it is likely to affect ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV 2 and other services on PSB2 multiplex.

Bernadette Newby: These boxes have a maximum storage capacity of 99 channels and should this total for any reason be exceeded then it results in the type of problem you refer to.

Press menu "installation" and select "first time installation" which results in the box "automatically" switching off for a few seconds, do not touch anything though until you see the LED on the front panel turning green, as this will then enable you to carry out a new installation.

That said, its always best policy when dealing with any older box to go into the "edit channels" facility and delete anything surplus to requirements immediately after having carried out the rescan.

Darwen

Hello, for the first time ever since freeview arrived I am having problems with Freeview reception. I live in Darwen and I use the Winter Hill transmitter.
Recently channels have disappeared (mainly ITV channels) and I have reception 'stutters' where there is a very brief gap in picture and sound. Also pausing has become erratic - sometimes working OK, others with the above mentioned proble on replay. I have 2 aerials one receives from the Darwen sub-transmitter and one from Winter Hill, each aerial feeds one Freeview box.
I have retuned/reset as per your advice and it seems to be retaining channels better but still having the reception problems described

Barry Ashbolt: I don't quite follow your posting. You say that you use Winter Hill but then you say you have two aerials.

If these aerial feeds are combined so as to feed into a single Freeview receiver then you may have an issue. If so then for BBC standard definition services (on PSB1) you will have to use Darwen on C45 rather than Winter Hill on C50. COM5 (Pick TV etc) on C49 will now no longer be available from your Winter Hill aerial.

Tony: Not via terrestrial television (Freeview). This is because the Commercial licensees don't have an obligation to provide a Public Service and so stick to the transmitters which give them most viewers for least cost.

See here for an explanation:

I suggest that you look to installing free-to-air satellite service Freesat.

Tony: No, as anywhere on the Marina side of the water is too low down to receive signals from the main station Bilsdale, not of course that its reception is much better at higher levels either as its really a hit and miss situation.
