To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Lost all of the BBC channels after a retune today. Live in ox41au in a flat with shared roof areal. Tuned to Oxford transmitter. Anything I can do? Have there been recent changes that mean that the aerial needs rejigging?

Christian: There have been no changes to BBC services.

On 29th May, COM4 or "SDN" multiplex which carries ITV3 and others changed UHF channel (frequency) and so communal aerial systems may require adjustment to allow for this.

For BBC standard definition services try manually tuning to UHF channel 53 (730MHz).

Christian: There have been no changes to the BBC channels in your area. The only mux which recently changed frequency was SDN. If you are unable to receive ITV3, QVC etc, in some instances an adjustment is required to communal aerials in order to let the new frequency through. Regarding the BBC channels, check the 800s of the channel list for BBC Oxford. If you have no BBC channels stored do a manual tune to C53. If you already have BBC channels in the channel list that do not work (ie weak version from Hannington stored) you might have to delete these first before storing the Oxford frequency.

People may be interested in this solution to the frustrating week or so I've just had with problems receiving ITV, C4, C% 5*, 5USA etc after two years of problem free reception in our new house. Started with a DVD recorder but the TV and another DVD recorder were OK, then TV was affected, then the other recorder but to the end the second identical TV in the back room was OK. Endless retuning, including dry retuning didn't work. Sometimes the channels wouldn't even appear in the channel list, other times they would but the signal was so poor they were unwatchable; some would be OK but then go again etc etc.. Panasonic support tried to help but no success. Yesterday my neighbour had an aerial installer out, I grabbed him, he checked it out and - long-story short - he replaced two co-ax cables between the equipment and hey presto! problem solved!

Ludlum: What you have reported just really backs up the fact that in most reception problem cases nothing can really beat that of an on-site investigation by an experienced and suitably equipped person.

Of course I suppose you landed lucky by the fact of being fortunate enough to have an aerial installer working next door at the time coupled to the fact that the problem referred to was actually in existence, rather than in many cases where the complaint might be relating to something of an intermittent nature whereby Murphy's law usually dictates that the chances of it NOT being in evidence when someone arrives to investigate are quite high, and which in turn can in some cases trigger a time consuming exercise if the problem is suspected as being caused by factors external to the property.

Kort Nyquist: Most aerials in your area appear to be facing towards Winter Hill albeit that according to indications seen its also possible to receive Freeview from the Lancaster transmitter in your area, something which may have happened whereby over populating the programme guide. You should carry out a retune without the aerial being connected for the purpose of blanking out anything already stored, once completed make sure that nothing is listed on the programme (EPG) guide then go into your TV or boxes set up menu / tuning / manual tune then enter and scan each mux channel number one at a time and storing the results before passing onto the next mux, this being the only way to guarantee that your EPG listing only contains content from Winter Hill. Muxes used by Winter Hill / 50 (BBC) - 59 (ITV) - 54 (HD service) - 58 (ITV3) - 49 (Pick TV) - 55 (Film 4)

Kort Nyquist: In addition to that said, when during the start of the manual tuning procedure and you have entered the first mux channel in the list (BBC 50) hesitate before pressing search or scan, as in most equipment the signal strength of the channel entered is usually shown, jot down whatever it is for reference purposes just in case the scan doesn't result in a picture being seen, because should this happen try the same test on mux Ch59 and compare the difference in levels.

Needless to say that should you require to carry out the latter test do NOT press search, just exit the tuning menu.

Post Code BH20 5RT (West Lulworth, Dorset)
All channels from mux PSB2 (ITV) are OK (quality 100%)
All channels from mux PSB1 (BBC) are quality ~50% and the picture keeps stopping and starting, and Wimbledon is unwatchable
We are within line of sight of the Lulworth relay transmitter.
