To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

W. Brentnall: On the issue of having lost recordings on the Humax, plus the fact of not being able to make any new ones, this definitely points to the hard drive having failed, unfortunately there being no way around the problem except by having the hard drive replaced, this action not being particularly cost effective on non HD versions of the slightly older variety.

As far as wishing to receive East Midlands programmes from Waltham rather than that more applicable to the West, although this can easily be achieved by firstly blanking out the channels already stored in the tuner, the easiest way being to remove the aerial followed by selecting auto-tune, then cancelling it just after it starts, this then followed by reconnecting the aerial and "manually" tuning in Waltham's BBC on Mux C49, storing the result before carrying out a similar action on Waltham's ITV on Mux C54, Waltham's other "National" channels being C58 (HD) C29 - C56 - C57 - COM7 (HD) C31- Local C26.

However, "before" carrying out the aforementioned, your aerial would require to be turned around to face towards Waltham (30 miles) on a bearing of 108 degrees, as Sutton Coldfield (28 miles) is on a bearing of 210 degrees.

That said, there is nothing to stop you from trying an experiment to see if any traces of a signal from Waltham are presently possible using the boxes manual tuning facility, the procedure being to select C49 (also try C54) in manual tune but do "not" press search, as the idea is to observe if anything appears in the strength / quality bars.

W. Brentnall: In addition to that said with regards to using the boxes manual tune facility for the purpose of detecting the presence of any signal from the Waltham transmitter, as you are located at only 3 miles or so away from the Derby Freeview light PSB only transmitter which is a relay of Waltham, then this station might prove to be a better bet, its BBC being on C48 / ITV C51 / with the HD service on C52, the station being on a bearing of 193 degrees.

Should a workable BBC and ITV signal be obtained from this transmitter, this still leaves the problem of all the other commercial channels having to be received from either Waltham or Sutton Coldfield, as Derby only broadcasts PSB channels.

On the subject of the hard drive again, another point I meant to mention being, that even although on "some" occasions it might be found that disconnecting the box from the mains then waiting a minute or so before reconnecting it again appears to have rectified the problem, the downside is that it seldom ever lasts for long likewise cannot be trusted, as anything recorded could easily vanish again.

Richard Theobald: Could be a problem with your aerial, and you've lost that mux. Check aerial connections, etc.

There was engineering work being done yesterday, which reduced HD signal strength, but it was only for about half an hour. Bolehill (Derbyshire, England) Freeview Light transmitter

Hope you can help. In our bedroom we have a TV which originally came with limited Freeview Channels. I recently bought a Freeview box [to increase the Channels] but can when I switched over the message was "No Signal" so I have had to return to limited Freeview Channels. Would appreciate any help. Thx.

ROGER HARRIS: Please can you clarify your point about the bedroom TV which "originally came" with "limited" Freeview channels. The TV doesn't "come" with any channels, it is down to what is supplied via the aerial. What is the thinking behind using a box to increase the number of channels? Without knowledge of your location, preferably in the form of postcode it is not possible to have any idea as to whether you may be stuck with what is unofficially termed "Freeview Lite". It would also be useful to know whether the limited channels are BBC One and ITV/STV/UTV, with no Commercial (COM) channels ITV3, Pick and 4Music -- focus in on these five as this is one from each multiplex (which is a single signal).

Thanks Dave. Just some background. Sold our house and moved into rented while looking for something else to buy.....so a communal aerial...and just FYI our AV [when setting up Sat TV in Living room hooked up aerial cable from two Co-AX points in the same room ?] so in the bedroom the TV picks up the 5 main channels....ITV 2 & 3...Pick...4+1 Film $ More 4 Yesterday etc. I've tried removing plug & aerial and after 30 secs' switching on and clearing the channels and then popping in the aerial and re-loading but picture on all Channels just breaks up ?

ROGER HARRIS: If the TV has been tuned to the correct frequencies (and thereby correct transmitter) then retuning is a fruitless effort. The best thing to do would be to tune the bedroom TV in with it in the lounge, connected to the lounge's incoming aerial socket.

In some places the lounge will have an incoming aerial socket and an outgoing on -- outgoing to the other room(s) such as the bedroom. This is so that a satellite receiver box can add its own analogue picture and thereby be viewed in the other rooms.

Therefore, is there such a socket in your lounge? If so, try linking the incoming socket to the outgoing one and see if the picture in the bedroom improves.
