It depends on the box and TV set you have.

If you have a widescreen TV, simply goto the 'setup' menus on your set-top box and tell the box you have a 16:9 set.

If you have a 4:3 TV, you can select a 14:9 mode or a 16:9 letterbox either from the setup menus or by pressing the 'WIDE' button on the remote control.

Aerial on roof.
When switching on freeview box picture & sound both good.
After a few minutes colour is lost, thereafter picture fluctuates from black & white to colour at 2 or 3 minute intervals.
No problems when TV connected to DVD player.

I. McDougall:
Sounds like a problem with your TV.
When you turn it on it will heat up and any bad solder joint may break until after you turn it off and it cools down.
How old is it and is it a new flat screen TV or an old cathodeay tube screen.
Could be dust in the TV.
If it was a bad aerial or week signal it would go snowy as well as black and white.

A cathodeay tube can store high voltages even after the TV has been turned off. So get someone to look at it or get a new TV.

If you have a separiate Freeview box and TV, then try swapping them with a friend, to see if it's the TV, Freeview box or the SCART cable.

Sometimes it depends on the way the actual programme was made. If it's an older programme it could have been made in 4.3 mode. Try putting the TVs aspect ratio to Original, or 14.9 mode. In this mode some TVs will automatically change to the aspect ratio that the programme was originally made in. If it was made in 4.3, you will lose the edges of the picture to avoid it appearing stretched or out of shape.
