P>S To add to my post I have checked out a Technisat "Freesat" single tuner PVR receiver and this manages this as well As an aside this receiver makes an ideal choice if your resident either as an owner or tenant in a flat where there is a communal dish but only single feeds and outlet boxes can be connected to

Bob Roach - No Bob you can't split the signal. You can use a SKY plus box utilising one of the tuner inputs but this will limit it's capability. You could buy yourself a "Freesat" Technisat HDFS receiver cost £120.00 but no subscription charges. This has a single tuner and records to either a high capacity USB Pen Drive or a laptop external HDD. The difference between the two receivers aside the subscription element is that the Technisat is HD but will record, series record, pause play as a SKY box and also stream to and from your PC. You need to factor in the the cost of the drive you choose.

P>S You can only record one channel whilst watching another, but this will be the position with a twin tuner SKY Plus box where only one of the tuners is connected to a single wall outlet.

Lin - One option would be to buy yourself an SD "Freesat" receiver from Argos for £29.99 and have an extra feed taken from the SKY dish to the bedroom. This would not be expensive and would allow you to have the flexibility of channel choice on the bedroom receiver.

Mal Heathcote - There are Pros and cons for both platforms. If your are in an area where you are served by a terrestrial Relay Transmitter then you will receive the "Freeview" Lite service with a more limited channel selection than that offered by a main transmitter. Subscription Satellite has a wide range of channels on offer but is an ongoing expenditure commitment with almost a single player monopoly (dis-counting that offered by Cable). "Freesat" is a non subscription satellite service backed by the BBC and ITV. An external aerial installation is required for "Freeview and a satellite dish for "Freesat" If an existing aerial and or dish is present then it's likely these will suffice without further expenditure.

There are several "Freesat" DTR recorder receivers on the market with some recently released or about to be released editions..These are wide ranging in price and capability from around just under £120 to £650 Established releases from Harvard Group (Bush Grundg etc) Sagem, Humax,Technisat,Panasonic with BlueRay -( The most expensive) with new additions by Samsung and Echostar and about to be released range from Manhattan. All from these manufacturers available on the high Street and Online.

Purchasing your own receiver means that your not open to the recording facility being disabled as with a SKY box were you to un-subscribe from that service.

"Freeview" PVR's would normally have an onboard tuner but you could use a recorder without as you state your TV has this facility. Price range for PVR or alternative recorder up to about £250

There should be no issues in connectivity in your equipment as you simply use the TV remote to switch the source as is required. In some instances this is an automatic process.

This info should give you food for thought prior to your move.

tyrone - To subscribe to a SKY sports package sees you having to take on a basic subscription package first. A minimum 12months contract is required but you do get your self a receiver from SKY.supposedly free which if you un-scribe from after the initial 12 months contract is yours to keep. However if it's a SKY Plus box with recording capability then this is disabled at the point you cease your contract. If you have an HD package this adds a further £10. per month to any other packages you have contracted for.

The cheapest entry into Satellite television is to buy your own freesat or FTA (free to air receiver) but you won't get the range of Sports packages you do get with SKY who basically have a monopoly here, Protected sports packages are available via the BBC and ITV on Satellite and Terrestrial TV.

A basic SKY package (Required) with an additional Sports package and HD could be around £40 to £50 per month. "Freesat" or an FTA receiver will cost you the price of the receiver and dish indtallation but no monthly payments.

BT Vision or Cable will give you some of the basic SKY sports packages ie:- Sports 1 and 2 where their subscription prices are cheaper but are of course not a satellite service.

Upgrading from Sky to Freesat | Freesat
Saturday 2 April 2011 2:30PM

Paul M Timmins It may be a better option if your SKY receiver is in the Lounge to have your Humax replace it there as your SKY plus will not be able to record as it is disabled from recording when you unsubscribe from SKY.
With your Humax remember to peel back the clear protective strip under the front flap as it can sometimes affect the remote controls handshaking with the receiver sensor giving a less positive switching of functions/Cnannels. It's not that easy to see but you will be able to peel it back with you finger nail, OK.

Valerie, it's likely that a new DVD will have an option to connect to the TV's HDMI port(s) and most likely will have an HDMI included. If not they are readily available on the High Street. If you need to do this don't let a salesman talk you into an expensive cable a reasonable priced item from Tesco or the iokes will do the same job.
