"Any households receiving cable or satellite will not be eligible for free help."

That does indeed stink. Especially if they include non-subscribers who have Freesat or out of contract boxes. They nay be denied many channels they only get from Freeview.

How could they know you have though? Most help will be sending out filters for us to fit.

Quite wrong they're allowed to limit filters to one per household. How many have just one Freeview TV or recorder nowadays? I have seven! They wreck the reception, they pay!

I too will miss out on Freeview, but might they all be available via Sky/Freesat? I had assumed Sky would offer one postcode defined local, but this suggests otherwise: Ofcom: Sky's Local TV proposals, Virgin Media and Freesat respond: Updated - Recombu

I wonder what the OFCOM arrangements are for when the local TV 'licences to lose money' default on their carriage payments and end unsustainable local programming, as they all will. (With the possible exception of London).

I expect they will be allowed to become a nightmarish mixture of sub-BidTV shopping and televangelists. In the name of market forces.

Absolutely. We must defend our beloved home grown measures - avoirdupois. This alien metric crud is clearly a European conspiracy by the same people who put that metal plate in my head!

Let's have proper English units, like Le Galon and ein Tonne, all invented by great Britons like Fahrenheit.

Wot next? Brussels will be claiming Jack Marconi and Henry Hertz were foreigners!

Thank you Peter. I'm pretty sure I was joking too!

60 cheers for the Babylonians, btw...

Another very useful improvement for most.

Personally, I prefer the Zeitgeist tab. When I select it, and view a story, the box reverts to the 'Live Updates' default, resulting in an extra click to get back to Zeit. Any chance it could remember our tab choice?

And while I'm being picky, five word summaries don't really give enough info to decide whether it's a story of interest. Would a hover expansion or longer summary be possible?

I still prefer the catchier 'Freeview More Popular Than Jesus' headline! PR of the year.

(Though we wouldn't want our DVRs piled up and burned by the KKK and then shot by Mark David Chapman...).

Stoddy75 I'd be interested to know which Freeview HD box lets you rearrange channels like that.

Our lovely Sony TVs do, but none of our (many) Freeview DVRs.

Perhaps they're commissioning a UK version of Hardcore Pawn, but the crew in that photo are All-American, Yes Sirree Bob...

You don't often get 'Jewelry', shorts or 'physique' like that in Brighton!

With CBS Reality only recently landed on Freeview, we're looking like a dumping ground for a deluge of phoney 'factual' format TV. I'm no snob - I love Discovery Shed! - but I know scripted 'unscripted' staged fiction when I see it. Notice how they had to stop making 'reality' shows during the writer's strike?

With the dumbing down of the once great documentary channels like History and Discovery etc, commercial TV's IQ is falling fast. Let's hope the next election doesn't leave TJ Harris's friends free to make more BBC cuts. BBC4's demise would reduce telly's IQ to remedial.

Briantist: you were just unlucky to receive a duff early YouView box - or duff early firmware. We've bought several of the original BT and Humax units second hand for about £50 and they are terrific.

It equals Sky+ for speed and usability, and beats it for lock-ups, catch-up player implementation, and of course radio, which Sky treats with contempt. We haven't used Freetime, but it would need to be good to better even first gen YouView (and ignoring the dish costs).

@Briantist A minor local TV update. Liverpool's Bay TV say their Freeview launch due end June was delayed until a Storeton relay is ready in October. They reckon it's that important for coverage even in Liverpool.
