Freeview Reception Problems

Hi all

Need some advice please, we are getting intermittent Interference resulting in the TV picture breaking up and making the most horrid noises, it is worse at night time most nights!

We have had an ongoing Aerial saga now for a month, it has cost us hundreds of pounds and still we can not watch TV without interference.

We have had Filters fitted, Mast Head Amp (made it worse!) Screened Coax Sockets, Webro HD100 cable fitted, F connectors used where ever possible and a Triax LTE Unix 52 T Aerial with built-in LTE Filter mounted on the chimney Stack and after all this we still have interference.

We are now operating on just the Triax aerial and the Webro cable and that seems to be as good as we can get, but not good enough for my liking.

We are using the Winter Hill transmitter and we live in Cheshire, WA6 0NJ.

We are located on the top of a hill and we have sight from our house to the Winter Hill Transmitter looking north and the Moel y Parc transmitter looking west, we appear to be closer to Moel y Parc transmitter than Winter Hill as the lights look much brighter from hear on Moel y Parc at night lol.

I am losing the will with Freeview and I am so close to giving up and calling Sky!

I have tried everything, I turned everything off in the house and I mean everything! to make sure it wasn't something local causing it and that made no difference, we are rural village and sadly we don't have things such as 4G or 3G for that matter so I guess we can rule that out.

I last had a guy hear yesterday who installed the Triax aerial and mounted it higher and he got a good reading from the Winter Hill Transmitter but sadly last night and today we are still having interference.

Would the issue of interference go away if I was to have the aerial pointing at Moel y Parc? would it be as simple as that? is it just my house don't like the Winter Hill Transmitter?

This village is a signal nightmare for everything, Phones, radio its all rubbish! it very much depends on what house you live in, Vodaphone works on one side of the hill but not the other as an example.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I chuck any more money at it!

Andy:
Thanks guys for all the info, much appreciated.

There are no wind turbines local to us and yes the system has been completed renewed, renewed with the best I could afford.

We have only lived here in this house for two months, having said that we have lived in this village for years and have only move to the top of the hill, down at our old house we had two aerials, one to Winter Hill and one to Moel y Parc, we use the Moel y Parc for BBC One as it was week at our old house from Winter Hill.

Even though here at the new house we have only one aerial pointing to Winter Hill we still get the Moel y Parc transmissions which are up in the 800s.

I have checked the info and the signal is 92% and the quality is 90% and we are tuned to Winter Hill transmitter.

Is the there to much signal?

Thanks for the info regarding engineering work but this has been ongoing for two months now!

we do have great line of sight to both Winter Hill and Moel y Parc, you can see both masts from this house at night with there long reaching red lights climbing into the air.

I really don't know what else I can have done, there is another Transmitter local to us at Elton but it is only a relay, we purchased a new Freeview full HD smart TV 6 weeks ago to enjoy HD but you cant enjoy much when the TV is sounding like it does and the picture is blocking.

Not sure this is of any help but BBC Three is defo the worst affected channel

Guys thanks again for the info.

I called the guy back and explained what had been happening and also explained that I had sort help from this web site, anyway he has fitted a 12dB attenuator, he reassures me this should do the trick.

He also informed me that the reading on his meter was 90dB at the aerial, this don't mean much to me but he said this was very high!

Had TV on now for 2 hours and haven't seen any signs of the picture breaking up or horrid noises, fingers crossed!

I never thought for one min that we would be getting to much signal, we live so far away from the Winter Hill transmitter I automatically thought it would be week, after reading MikeB reply and link it got me thinking!

Anyway so far so good! cheers guys for all your help, really appreciate it.

Andy:

Evening all, back again!

Aerial gate continues :-(

After spending the last two weeks increasing attenuators in the hope to reduce what I understood to be interference the TV picture was still breaking up.

One evening I decided to sit and watch the onscreen signal and quality bars to see what happened when I had picture break up, yes I have become that obsessed! lol. It seems that its maybe not interference but the signal is dropping completely out! and then returns, the same happens with the Quality.

Interestingly ITV seems ok! BBC is defo the worst.

So one last attempt before I called SKY I went to Screwfix and purchased one of these
Labgear TV Aerial High-Gain Digital | TV Aerials & Freeview | Screwfix.com

Decided to give the Mole y Parc transmitter a go seen as my house don't like Winter Hill.

Stuck it in the loft and pointed it to Mole y Parc connected it to the splitter with some of the Webro cable and all has been fine! its not had a blip! even all HD channels are received with 95% signal and quality, how ever I am slightly confused! ITV HD is ITV Central? I watched from news from Birmingham!? not sure how I managed to get a midlands signal! Hay ho

Anyway I am rambling! my Question is, can I combine the two aerials into on down lead? I am more than happy to use the Welsh Service for general viewing but I will miss good old Granada News, we had two aerials at our old house on to Wales and one to Winter Hill but haven't a clue how it was done, strange thing is we had issues with BBC at our old house hence the two aerials.

Any advice would be very much appreciated, I have spent so much money paying Aerial Guys to get me a decent signal and don't want to spend any more! I have spent about £550 already!!

Evening all

Can anyone tell me were I can purchase a UHF/UHF Diplexer to combine The Wrekin Group K (CH 21 - 48) with Moel y Parc Group B (CH 35 - 53) ??

Been searching the web for weeks now and still cant find one! Am I looking for something that doesn't exist?

Any advice much appreciated, Trying to avoid just using a splitter!

Masthead Amp powered by distribution amp?

Good Afternoon all

I have a question and would be grateful of any advice anyone may have on the subject.

I have a Vision masthead amp that is powered by a 4 way SLX Distribution Amp, the Masthead Amp states a maximum of 65mA. The SLX Distribution Amp that is powering the Masthead Amp states its line power is only 25mA.

Is the Masthead Amp ok only having a 25mA supply? will it be working normally only having a 25mA supply?
Is the Masthead Amp likely to be over working the SLX Distribution Amp?

Any advice much appreciated

MikeP: jb38 thank you both for your replies, much appreciated.

Mike you are correct I could do with learning more about electricity, I am somewhat lacking in this area!

When I took a look at both the SLX and the Masthead amp It did get me thinking that things didn't seem to match up.
like I say I am no electrician but I did think that the numbers didn't seem to add up and it was my concern that if the amp is overworking the SLX that it may fail, I was even more concerned that its up in the loft that does get very hot in summer and the thought of it being over worked and in heat leaves me feeling a little uncomfortable! hence me asking you guys that know considerable more about this subject than me!!

Not sure what you guys think about my plan, please feel free to correct me if incorrect on anything, my main aim is making sure the setup is safe and will deliver years trouble free service.

The SLX has been in the loft for a long time buy the looks of it so I was thinking of replacing it with a newer updated possibly safer distribution amp, obviously I need to make sure a new distribution amp has line powering and is capable of supplying the Masthead amp with the correct current, keeping in mind that I have a Vision Masthead Amp (that's is new! and very low noise) and I am really pleased with its performance I was thinking about replacing the SLX with one of these -

V65-204LTE 4 Way 4G-800 IR Return Amplifier

Andy:

Just been looking on line, I think this may be a more appropriate replacement?

PROCEPTION - PROAMP24 - AMPLIFIER TV AERIAL 4 WAY | CPC UK

I think this fits all the requirements of the Masthead amp if I have understood correctly?
