Below are all of Martin Rosen's postings, with the most recent are at the bottom of the page.Tim: I am really wondering if it is worth it all. As I said I can pick up all other Freeview channels through my DR. If I really want to record a programme from the terrestrial stations I can use the standard channels (1,2,3 etc.) rather than the HDs.
I was just hoping somebody maybe able to give me a quick fix.

jb38: Sorry for the delay in coming back to you. I took the following readings this morning.
BBC News Signal 74% Quality 100%
Yesterday 46% / 100%
BBC1 HD 14% 0% - 44% (varying).
I have already determined that I am picking the signal up from the correct Crystal Palace transmitter.
I have yet to check my cables, but I think one is a white plastic cable with moulded plugs at each end.
My recorder is Sony SVR-HDT500 Freeview+ HD

Anoraky questions here !
Firstly what do the numbers 1060i (I think) mean?
Why is there not any teletext on the HD channels?
When BBC1 is broadcasting regional opt-outs they are not carried by HD. Can they not do this? Also the caption says that the regional programme is on Channel 101/1. Channel 101 is Teletext Holidays !
Thank you.

jb38: The plug coming from the socket in the wall to the Recorder is thick brown cable with a silver coax plug at each end. Both ends are screwed in tightly and I can just see a bit of inner core wire in the middle hole.
The ones out from Recorder to the television is white plastic, and plus are moulded on. No inner core is visible.

Neil Bell: Thanks for the info. I had presumed that when we went digital they no longer transmit lines for the picture. Of course it was 625 lines (I can also recall 405!!). Sometimes, I have noticed that it is a lesser figure than 1080. Does that mean I am not getting a full signal?
I miss Ceefax. One main reason was that it was always possible to check your watch to the second ! But I used to like their newsflash (which got discontinued anyway), that if there was an important story it would come up on the screen. But I suppose times move on. I think there are areas that haven't retuned yet, and they are probably still getting the Ceefax service.
So really what the caption should say is that regional programmes are on Virgin 101 and Freeview 1 - what about Sky and Frestat ?!! I think their caption is misleading.
Cheers

NICK ADSL UK: Just rescanned my DR. Still the same problem with the HD channels breaking up (it is like a tear across the screen for approx 1 - 2 seconds every few seconds).

JB38: Had time this morning to catch up!
I am approximately 19 miles (north) of the CP transmitter, according to Google Maps.
I connect from the digital recorder through an HDMI lead, I don't use a scart.
I tried swopping the white lead with the brown lead and they don't fit vice versa. I presume one is 'male' and the other 'female' at both ends.
I don't think I will buy a set-top aerial just for an experiment! As I have previously said, if I want to record anything from the BBC 1/2 or ITV/Ch4 I will use the SD channels, it is not as if I get a significant difference in picture (it is only marginally better on HD).
Thanks for your help.

PS ! The neighbours I have checked with about their reception, all view through Sky.

jb38: I will try the long wire!
Would I get a defective signal on just the HD channels? As I said all the others seem to be okay.

Dave Lindsay: Tim: Thank you both. I will look and see how close my HDMI cable is to the aerial, but it shouldn't be nearer than the distance that they come out of the back of DR.
What are "good quality aerial plugs"? How does one determine "good quality"? What is the difference between satellite cable and 'ordinary' coaxial cable? I think I used the ones that were on my analogue tv. Would the ones that came in the box be suitable?
Any thoughts why I got a good picture yesterday but not today. I would consider weather conditions, except it is has been bad both yesterday and today!
