Andrew,i think i may have the answer,on the signal strength, the meter shows,Signal strength and signal quality, even though i live in a swamp area, the signal quality goes up and down like a fruit machine,so unless
you 60-70 percent constant, the freezing starts,i try not to get irrated by it,sometimes, switch on/off,and rescan seems to help, hope that helps.Since i have an indoor aerial on top of telly, its easy to move around, but im lucky practially next door to the oxford tx.

Hi mikep, thank you for yr polite reply, other people seem to be otherwise,in my eperience in using insulated copper wire seems to be fine, the tv or whatevers input circuitry seems to uncritical,i use a set top single element because im in a swamp area from oxford, before i changed it to a copper wire,in spite of the high
field strength it was troublesome, when changed to copper, hannington at 40miles,10ft above the ground produces a locked picture, the only disadvantage of copper sheet is the cost and the work involved.Possibly,in poor signal areas copper would produce a better and more stable picture, its a pity someone in a fringe area cant try it and advise, but again some technical knowledge is needed,tks............

Banacek: this seems to be a problem with todays tv circuitry, the tuner gets pulled to the strongest signal,i have a car radio that wouldnt hold a weak signal in the presence of a stronger signal, possible realign aerial or more directive type fitted.

hi,nick,i think strict impedance matching isnt required, most domestic equipment is loosely coupled, but i would try changing the ali dipole for a copper wire ,i changed a set top to same and got a locked picture at 45 miles from hannington at ground level, the aluminiun wouldnt supply enough for a locked picture. What were the benefits signal wise of the bbc X?

to hardy, tks for the explanation,if i made a version for 27mhz what sort of radiation pattern horizontally?

hi hardy,i remember now,i lived in swindon and some parts had chronic multi path,so the X might have helpful,ta nick

hi nick, subsitute the alumin dipole with a insulated copper wire, bent in the shape of the dipole,my indoor aerial picked up a locked picture so it was either better matching to the tv input circiutry or the copper wire
dipole was more efficent. That was hannington, about 40 miles distant at ground level.
