Detailed comparison Freeview/Sky
Thursday 6 December 2012 2:38PM

David Noble-Nesbitt: Yes! as the only common connection between both systems will be your TV, because the Sky boxes will be using the scart connections on your TV and with the Freeview HD box being coupled into the TV using an HDMI lead, this presuming that your TV has an HDMI socket hence why you are after the HD box from Talk Talk, as a scart connection only allows SD.

John: Freesat TV's always combine this with a Freeview reception facility but not necessarily Freeview HD unless on a more upmarket model, the lack of on your TV assumed as being what you are referring to?

However as far as recording from the TV is concerned, Freesat TV's are basically not any different from Freeview types in this respect, as although this can be done on most types via the AV1 socket (AV1 & 2 on Panasonics) there are models that do not have an output facility via these sockets.

Just out of interest, what model of TV are you referring to?

Paul Lister: Yes! as both these programmes are on the same multiplex (ArqB / COM6) and which transmits on Ch47, and my reason for requesting that you also try a check on Mux Ch44 (ArqA / COM5) was so that a signal strength / quality comparison could be made between the reception of these two transmitters, as both operate on 10Kw.

With regards to the erratic quality witnessed on Mux Ch47, this has to be looked at with reference to what you have reported on Mux Ch44, insomuch that if Ch44 is indicating 100% in both strength and quality then the next stage up from an indication of 100% is the possible onset of instability in the tuner caused by an excessively high level of signal, the symptoms of this being "exactly" as you have reported on Mux Ch47, as even although Muxes may have the same power rating is not by any means the case that they will be received at the same strength as each other.

On the other hand, Muxes are not necessarily always received at the same strength because RF signals do not conform to any rigid sets of rules, and it may be the case that the main beam of Ch47 is not reaching you in a direct fashion by being reflected from some distant object, this being the type of situation that can result in large fluctuations in quality, but though the only way to find out which of the two situations applies is to take measures to reduce the signal reaching your TV, because "if" your problem is being caused by an excessively high level of signal then the massively fluctuating quality will "instantly" stabilise as soon as the signal strength is reduced.

However should the situation "not" improve any then unfortunately, and terrible as it might be to say, but there really isn't much that you can do about this with the exception of possibly trying experiments with the aerial in an alternative position, this meaning in the horizontal plane and not necessarily higher, as in most cases this does not really make much of a difference and in some instances can make matters worse, as the "higher the better" only really applies 100% of the time to an aerial used for transmission purposes.

brian: If you are referring to an RS0620 then you can download the instruction manual from the link.

heather: When you have already had two visits from an aerial engineer and yet your problem still persists then its not very easy for anyone to offer advice from afar, because nothing beats an on-site investigation, especially where it involves a problem of an intermittent nature that "might" involve something extremely local to your place of residence.

The other point being, that with any query involving reception a post code or one from nearby (e.g: a shop) is required, this to enable access to the reception predictor plus give an idea of the locality as far as the existence of any possible obstructions to the signal is concerned, such as trees etc.

Another aspect being, that living in the North of Edinburgh could involve reception from either Craigkelly or Black Hill, and so this would have to be determined should you not be aware of where you are receiving from, this usually revealed by carrying out a signal check on your TV or box whilst on BBC or ITV and noting the channel number seen associated with the strength / quality indication.

Blackhill: BBC Ch46 - ITV Ch43
Craigkelly: BBC Ch27 - ITV Ch24

Peter Troll: Yes, BBC and the HD services from Linnet Valley has been off the air from 18.22hrs for reasons unknown, likewise as is the expected time for its return.

Sam: Many thanks for your update on the situation as I always appreciate being informed regarding the outcome of anything suggested, likewise I am pleased to learn that you have achieved a reasonable level of success using the Konig booster, and especially so when taking into account the fact that the engineering work being carried out at the Waltham transmitting station remains with a status of on-going, and something which is unfortunately responsible for the problems experienced by quite a number of disgruntled viewers within the stations service area.

Pleased to have been of assistance and thank you again for the update.

Kind Regards / JB

Chattes: Although Freeview reception from Waltham has been, and still is, a bit iffy at times over the past few weeks what you have reported could suggest that some other factor is coming into the equation, this making me wonder what method you are using to feed the signal from the aerial into your Blue-Ray player as well as your TV's? as a low boost powered splitter should really be used.

Maybe you could give an update as far this is concerned.

Steve Morton: Well although the reception predictors indications have on some occasions to be taken with the usual pinch of salt, however what is indicated for your location could not really be much worse, as reception from the Westward Ho! transmitter only gives the BBC as being reasonably reliable for reception but with the ITV and the HD service not as they both indicate variable, this being the most likely cause of your problem.

Regarding the aerial on your roof, do you use any form of booster? but irrespective of whether you do or not you should carry out a manual tune on the HD mux as sometimes a manual tune will pick up what is missed by an auto tune.

The other thing to try is when you enter Ch22 in the manual tune box do NOT press scan or search, as on most equipment (but not all) the strength the signal is being received at is usually indicated, although this does not always mean that it will result in a picture because as soon as "search" or "scan" is pressed the reception threshold system comes into play.

That said though, I do have serious doubts regarding your ability to ever achieve a satisfactory level of reception, as only with Freesat can someone in a location such as yourself really achieve this, plus of course should you manage to obtain reception of sorts you would be limited to a PSB service only.

It would also be of interest to know the model of TV you have purchased.

Steve Morton: Unfortunately now that the model number is known it somewhat throws a different complexion on your problem, insomuch that this model is not fitted with a DVB-T2 tuner but only a DVB-T version, and its the former mentioned that is required for actual reception of an HD signal.

Lots of people get caught out with the wording used by a whole host of manufacturers, but "full HD" only really means that the set is HD ready and is capable of showing a full HD image should any external device be coupled into the set via its HDMI sockets.
