Richard and Steve : What a surprise... This day I weaved and dived around
sunken Devon lanes. Radio 5 on 909kHz fuzzed occasionally, but was always audible - even though my new-car AM/FM radio is not the most sensitive. Query : what is a dropout?

Rog Parsons : "...easily tuned on any AM car audio without any fiddling about if you've taken the trouble to set up the pre-set buttons using the sets instructions . This surely has nothing to do with DAB..." Please note : like many others, my mediocre new-car radio only offers medium wave or FM. The LW gizmo enables me to listen to 153, 162, 177, 183, 198, 207, 234 or 252kHz. A similar gizmo could feed DAB, if receivable, to the car FM radio or, where available, to the AF input socket designed for smart-whatsits.

Sorry, Steve, that was my flat humour :-) In the car, on AM I get fading and a bit of static, on FM distortion and dropouts. On DAB I would get dropouts if I had it ...

Sergio, your Sky dish will probably be just big enough. When your tivu box is activated, try it and see. There are hundreds of broadcasts on 13°E, so if you receive no signals at all when the dish is aligned to the satellite position at 13°E, the LNB might need replacing to match the box. If you receive some signals, but not the ones you want, check that the dish is correctly aligned to the satellite before investing in a bigger dish. If you have problems, you might need help from someone who is familiar with satellite installations.

"...sometimes they ask you to put 60 or 90 cm dick because they only want to make more money ..." (boplazima). This may be true of some unscrupulous dealers. However, when a 45cm dish struggles in heavy rain or snow, a 60cm dish can prove its worth...

Envy! Some reception areas are more equal than others. I listen to UK stations on FM where available and switch to AM where not. In these 'ere parts, DAB favours hilltops. My particular foible just happens to be for LW stations beyond La Manche. Hence the gizmo. I am, however, now tempted to check out the JVC. Thanks for the pointer!

If digitally recorded or remastered music were re-broadcast at the same bitrates, quality would be less of an issue. It would then be kinda nice to be able to receive such quality under the DAB transmitter - and equally far away. Little chance of FM-equal coverage yet.

I found this list of Phase 4 transmitters and on-air dates (Dave Lindsay) :- BBC - DAB Phase 4 - Help Receiving TV and Radio Aye, nor is our glen listed, so I must needs get a new lump of galinium for my digital radio (finger-manipulated cat's whisker job) - and another consoling tot of Glenmorangie...

Are there any listener statistics for DAB+ yet?

At first sight this could be a progressive move, but I see no indication that the EU will graciously permit us free-to-view television from Free-TV-Alliance countries with one receiver and without registration and viewing-card restrictions. Reading between the waffle-lines it would seem that the scheme is intended primarily to benefit manufacturers through cost-reducing equipment standardisation. Early days, but let us hope the vision is indeed wider and develops in the spirit of European integration.
