Joe: are you on winter hill or storton wood with the high winds around here over the last couple of days it could be anything what you need to know it is the cheapest area in England to get a aerial fitted so bite the bullet and call someone out, ask someone you know who can recommend a good aerial man but don't use a 0800 number use someone local with a prefix you know

God give me strength I gave a price to a customer last week it was for a mrz 20 aerial going into a 4 way splitter, ( we are in a very good reception area) , rx12 aerial, 9" bracket and lashing, 32mm mast and 5 coax leads total cost £196 not a bad price for him. What I should have asked him was does he a rubbish job, I went passed today and saw what he had up 2 rx12 aerials must be going to 5 points 1" mast but worst of all a SSB ( self supporting bracket). What makes this even worse is that here in bickerstaffe we are very exposed and high up from my front bedroom window I can see mount snowden in Wales so wind load is always very high. I try to do a good job for a fair price and get undercut by a cowboy.

anthony: internal strength indicators on tv and pvr are only for a guide you should have it checked with a proper signal meter if you want a good local firm google grax aerial ring them in the morning and ask them to recommend a local installer they don't install only sell to the trade so instead of poor reception and posting here you could have it fixed

Thanet (Kent, England) DAB transmitter

Brian I know it is a bit of a faff but the aerial you have is very directional and very high gain ( and very good) for a dab so if you are interested in classical and not as much on local try a different transmitter

John: you make some great points but as you can see from my posts what you get depends on where you live as you say do some of these riggers have all the right insurance ,pay there tax or have the right equipment. People should only use a land line not a mobile number( I put my landline onto transfer to my mobile so I don't miss a call) I have been rigging for over 25 years the business has been going for over 30 years if I have a recall I do it straight away keep the customer happy. Some of the rubbish I see now makes my heart sink like the use of SSB or wall brackets in chimneys riggers who haven't a clue .

Roy Barton: you quote signal strengths but tv signal strengths meters are rubbish to check it properly you need a proper meter. I went to a customer yesterday the tv said 28% signal but my meter said 40 dbuv dropping lower when I left the signal was 60 dbuv but the tv was saying 35% get someone in so it can be checked properly.

Dennis Phillips: yes it can you are right it has been done very wrong and you should get your money back off the spark( what a moron ) if you are in a good reception area you will need a very high gain aerial, next you will have to fit in the back boxes tap units these let most of the signal through and taps a reduced amount to that point.this will be messy and will cost you more but that is life. If you live in a poor reception area you could be stuck but you will have to call out an aerial man don't try to do it your self you will only spend money and waste it.

Dave Lindsay: you will find it very hard to use taps without a meter because you need to know the input signal the loss in the tab and the through loss over 6 points some things do have to be done by professionals .

Dave Lindsay: don't know the site but if you have 80 dbuv of signal coming in the through loss could be 4db with a tap loss of 12 db. So there is 76 db going to next tap plus loss of the coax and 68 db going to the point.
