DoXe: It gets harder i have a local rigger charging £65 for rx12 on 9ft mast i did get the other job but in the north west when someone gets made unemployed tgey think what can i do i know i have a set of ladders i either clean windows or gutters repair roofs or aerials most up here plump for aerials. since the switchover there is not the work for more riggers. I see cables that i know have water pouring in and befor the switchover it would have broken up but now fine still letting in water damaging there tv or stb. Thats the problem with some of the advice given on this site the people giving the advice dont know the job so dont know all the things that can go wrong, the best advice to give most of the people here should be get a good local rigger who someone you know has used and recomends, not go out and buy a aerial from a company on the net that has a big mark up and still risk your own life trying to do the aerial sorry for the rant have a great christmas to all the riggers out there

Neil: One bit of advice i can give you is that i have yet to see an aerial in the loft give signal overload. The labgear amp only gives a 12db gain and 10 miles from a transmitter isnt that close. the most comon cause for a problem would be for the amp to have a fault as it is quite old i havent used one for over 5 years. One other in the last 3 years since winter hill switched i havent come accross signal overload. What you need to know is signal strength befor it goes into the amp and then what it is after for this you need a good meter. Any advice on this site is only advice without seeing your set up you will get nowhere. So my advice to you is if you want tv working for christmas is look for a local aerial man tonight call first thing in the morning and with luck he might fit you. Hope you have a merry christmas

Jb38 just to make things quiet clear you are not an aerial rigger but you are advising on all matters about aerials. I fit aerials 7 days a week for the last 24 years no other side line jobs. I am not a radio ham or spark i know my job some of the advice i see here is borderline dangerous, you wouldnt advise any one to mess around with there gas system or there ringmain because that could be against the law, but some of the posters are advising people to move ir check there aerials if they are on there roof or at a high apex this is not safe! if paying some one to do the job right is ok where do you work so we all can get in touch with your employers and advise them how to do your job then they wont need you and you can spend even longer helping others

Sheena-Ann Brown: try and ring a few different companys and explain to them your situation i for ine would try to get you working for christmas there will be lots of local riggers just try to avoid the 0800 numbers but you might have to use them as a last resort

jb38: Sorry i didnt mean to go of on one but this thread does annoy me. To get signal overload it has to be very very high i have seen 85dbuv work fine for a lot of the post here there is another problem.

jb38: you are missing the point i'm not just refering to mike my main transmitter in my area is winter hill one of the strongest transmitters in england and signal overload is just not a problem. If your signal worked after any switchover then you shouldnt have a problem. After the winterhill switchover i didnt have one call that was signal overload not one. If people have a problem with reception it is normaly down to the following, aerial fallen down, rear reflector flapping, coax broken or damaged letting in water, amplifier faulty, customer moveing cable stopping system, trees or other thing in the way stopping signal, other transmitters coming in over main transmitter. I will through this out to other aerial riggers who go out and work at the sharp end not just a keybord warrior is signal overload a big problem or a very very small one.

Andrew : as you have said you have allready tryed a manual tune if your coax comes straight from the aerial to your tv or stb have a look at the coax plug for rust or a milky white this could mean your coax is damaged this can start problems on one channel befor affecting others. Trees can also affect only one channel more than others .

Brian one other thing if every transmitter had to carry every multiplex would there be enough channel numbers not to cause interference. Like here in some places you could receive signal from winter hill storton wood moy e park Yorkshire Lancaster sklmersdale and parbold there also needs to be blank channel numbers for things like sky from rf2 and then the 4g clearance wouldn't it just be fun and games hope you have had a good Christmas

b horner : the most likely problem is broken cable letting in water or the cap on the aerial has detached
