QUITE RIGHT BRI I KNEW THIS LOOKED WRONG THE SECOND I TYPED IT. There is a famous Ken Follett though isn't there.

Good drama nevertheless. I must get my memory banks fixed. I do remember Earthsearch by JAMES FOLLETT first being broadcast on BBC R4 FM STEREO on Sundays at 12 noon many moons ago, however.

As we have discussed many times Brian your statement above that Radio 4 broadcasts in stereo at all times on all platforms is incorrect. The DAB BBC Radio 4 services drops into mono @ 80 kbps on occasions throughout the week and particularly on Fri nights when Any Questions & the Friday Play go out in stereo on FM but mono on DAB to allow sport to go out on 5 Live Sports Extra. Only when there is no sport is R4 DAB in stereo.

Any idea what happened at 6:15pm at Winter Hill during the BBC ONE continuity announcement and the beginning of DOCTOR WHO yesterday Sat 07 May 2011. Two dramatic breaks in picture and sound with green picture dispalcement. Was this due to LIGHTNING which was around at the area at the time. Ruined my recording. No power cut here ? Would have recorded it from Moel-y-Parc if I had known.

I think the lighning was in the Winter Hill area not the Macclesfield area, so no need to unplug the aerial here. Anyway no worries now, as I used my hard drive box editing skills to insert a bit of the BBC THREE Friday repeat of Dr Who, so the green blocks ruining Doctor Who are no more (deleted into the digital trash can). Not a bad job though I say so myself. The only spoiler is the two or three seconds of PINK logo which I can live with. I just love the versitility of the TOSHIBA bos's editing facility.

Brian : Has the quality of the sound on some BBC DAB digital radio stations improved recently vs FM, or have the BBC reduced the FM quality slightly to make digital sound a bit better. Certainly the base volume seems to have increased on my TECHNICS ST-GT 1000 tuner. The bit rates appear to be the same. The sound quality on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC World Service are still quite poor however. I have noticed a slight improvement on Radio 4 (when broadcasting on 128 kbps in stereo and not 80 mono) and BBC Radio 2.

Anyway my ears think it's better on these channels at least. Do you or others agree.

James : You do not pay a licence for ITV !! just BBC.

Nick : Re Freeview Radio Switchoff in Scotland, apparently there was a BBC Trust review and it was decided to replace certain BBC Radio channels in the evenings on FREEVIEW with BBC ALBA (Gaelic TV station) - listen to FEEDBACK on BBC R4 FM or on line or LW tomorrow evening (Sunday) @ 8pm for more information or Fri 17th June @ 13:30 on the BBC i-player.
