Channel 5 HD will launch on Freeview | Blogs

I thought there was no more space for extra HD channels on BBC MuX B once BBC HD (soon to be BBC TWO HD) and BBC ONE HD launched which replaced FIVE HD when they decided to go SKY ONLY. Does this not mean one of the BBC HD channels above will have to go ? Why have FIVE changed their mind.

Mick

Wouldn't FREESAT be a better option for Whaley Bridge, especially as LADDER HILL & BIRCH VALE only do Freeview Lite. No break up at all with FREESAT, apart from excessive snow events ? Nice spot I love walking around Taxal & the Goyt Valley.

So poor old Jimmy Savile sadly departs this world. Apart from his UK radio broadcasts I used to tune into 1413kHz MW from Masirah Island every Monday morning to hear the VINTAGE CHART SHOW in OMAN in 1987-88 hosted by Jimmy on the BBC WORLD SERVICE in the good old days when it used to broadcast a good variety/mix of programmes including music, drama, comedy, book readings, documentaries, Waveguide (programme about radio and technology), science, On the Move (transport), entertainment, UK News and much much more, rather than the very boring almost rolling news, sport and business news, highly repeated schedule of today. GOD BLESS YOU JIMMY (and the Duchess of course). Hope the "guys & gals" at the BBC see sense one day and revert back to type and FIX IT.

Has anyone worked out how many people will lose radio altogether in areas of the country both in cars and in houses in remote, hilly and coastal areas when FM, MW and especially LW are all switched off.

DAB will not be able to give continuous coverage in these areas : West Highlands, Lake District, parts of the Peak District, Glencoe, coastal areas, Cornwall, Wales, to name but a few. Not many car radios have DAB fitted as standard, even NOW ?

I hear on FEEDBACK that the main UK LW transmitter near DROITWICH (as seen from the M5) is effectively being left to dies as engineers will not replace certain parts when they fail. So no fixed date just a petering out !!

Film 4 HD would be a much better idea. I don't like the though of reduced picture quality though. Why bother with HD if it isn't ?

Perhaps they will call it LHD (Lower Higher Definition !!). Not really following the Japanese lead are we.

Not spreading any propaganda at all Mossard, what a strange view of my post. I just want to watch my BRITISH tele in the highest possible quality without having to spend a penny on MURDOCH TV. As was the case in the good old UHF COLOUR days, I am sick of bit rates being dropped to accommodate poor quality channels with very little to add to the mix. Fewer higher quality TV channels are better than loads of poor picture quality dross ones (especially where there are capacity issues). Too much dumbing down is apparent on digital TV in the last five years, as determined by the number of digital FREEVIEW channels I have deleted. In doing so the EPG looks much better however, even if the bit rate per channel left isn't as high as I would like.

Nedbod: Couldn't agree more Michael. Almost makes you think there might have been a hidden agenda. Like money received by certain elements for selling off the airwaves ?.

Not quite true Mark. BBC Radio 4 has reduced its bit rate over the last 10 years to allow additional sports coverage, particularly on Friday nights to the extent that its stereo output (on FM & Freeview & online) has to go out in mono on DAB (including Any Questions & The Friday Play). At a recent ANY QUESTIONS in ELY, I asked the warm up chap if he would ask the audience of about 400 how many of them had DAB in their cars and the answer came back : ZERO !!! How can the BBC realisticly switch off FM in 2015 if hardly anyone has DAB in their cars ? It costs £600 to add the purpose made Toyota DAB radio to their new AURIS. This despite a DAB button giving the impression it already has DAB fitted as standard, WHICH IT MOST CERTAINLY DOES NOT. THE new AURIS doesn't have LW either, so I have actually gone backwards from my last Toyota AURIS, as I cannot now receive YESTERDAY IN PARLIAMENT, THE DAILY SERVICE or the CRICKET & SHIPPING FORECASTS at NOON & 5:50pm - apart from on 720kHz MW in some areas (albeit in very poor quality).
