How digital television works
Sunday 25 July 2021 5:02PM

Keith: The power levels of most transmitters are set to provide equivalent coverage to the old analogue channels. You may be getting mixed up with the listings for analogue channels showing peak power level which will be much higher than the average power output, whereas digital transmissions are continuously broadcast at the same power level and don't vary during normal operation (i.e. you can't directly compare the analogue power level with the digital power levels from the same transmitter). No channel is allowed to show 50% adverts, the maximum that can be shown is 18 minutes per hour (with PSB channels limited further).

As I'm sure you know, the TV Licence does not fund any commercial channels (except S4C) and as it isn't a subscription it does not entitle you to reception of any particular channel. The UK is far from the only country to have a TV Licence, although some countries have abolished them, around half the countries in Europe have a TV Licence (or equivalent system), including Ireland, Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Poland (I got that list from Wikipedia, so you didn't look very far before claiming you couldn't find one). Various other countries have a charge added to electricity bills.

Laurence A May: 5Select moved to the PSB3 multiplex a few weeks ago, so it can now only be received if you have the HD channels on 101-105. If you can receive the HD channels, a retune should restore 5Select on 55.

Chris.SE: Most of the changes for PSB3 regionalisation will be at the coding and muxing centre where an additional set of coders will be setup for each new region, rather than any major changes at the transmitters, so the work taking place at Brierly Hill is extremely unlikely to be anything to do with regionalisation. Viewers might need to retune on the day the change takes place, but that should be publicised in advance.

Chris : What are the signal strength and quality readings for BBC and ITV channels? Both are broadcast at the same power level, so it's possible that your new aerial is receiving too much signal and causing your TV or box to be overloaded. Is there an amplifier connected to the new aerial anywhere?

Have you moved since your previous posts, as you've previously mentioned receiving different transmitters? If you provide a full postcode we'll be able to see where you are in relation to the transmitter and your predicted signal strength, which may enable more specific advice to be offered.

All free TV channels in the UK

Pratap: If your TV has a satellite tuner then connecting it to a dish will give you all the same Free To Air (FTA) channels that you would get on a Sky box if you removed the viewing card.

DAVID BRANSBY & Vicki Cawthorne: There is engineering work taking place at Bilsdale this week. Resetting/retuning was a bad idea as you may have now deleted your list of correctly tuned channels, so you will therefore need to retune again once the signal returns. Retuning is the worst thing to do if you suddenly loose signal and will not fix the problem in most instances.

john newell: Presumably your comment is directed at a particular channel, although you haven't said which one. This is an independent technical help website which aims to assist people with reception problems and has no connection with any broadcaster or channel, so it is unlikely that anyone from whichever channel your comment is aimed at will see it here.

There has been a fire this afternoon at the Bilsdale transmitter, resulting in all Freeview, DAB and FM Radio services being taken off air (some DAB and FM services may still be receivable with a weaker signal due overlapping coverage from other transmitters). The BBC are reporting that Arqiva have started work on restoring services, but depending on the extent of the damage it could take some time for repairs to be completed.

Do not attempt to retune as this will not bring the signal back and could delete your channel list, making it more difficult to know when the signal has returned.

Win: There has been a fire at the Bilsdale transmitter this afternoon, resulting in a loss of signal for all TV and radio services. See my post on the Bilsdale page for more information.

Judith Boad: Althought Pontop Pike is closer, Bilsdale is the best predicted transmitter for your postcode, so if you look at your aerial you will probably find that it is pointing approximately South-East towards Bilsdale, hence the loss of signal, rather than roughly West towards Pontop Pike.
