W raynham: Try asking the broadcaster. Sony (who used to own the Great channels before selling them a while back) reduced the coverage of several of their channels a couple of years ago, resulting in some of their channels not being available to large parts of the country. The new owners may decide to change this when spare capacity becomes available, however nothing has been announced.

William Jamieson: Rothesay is a Freeview Lite transmitter which only carries the PSB multiplexes. As it only covers less than 6,000 homes it is unlikely that any further multiplexes will ever be provided, as the commercial broadcasters don't view the cost of the equipment, power and maintenance to be worthwhile to serve such a small audience. Your mother in law must be receiving Freeview from a main transmitter. If you want more channels, look at getting Freesat.

Javed: The loss of subtitles on Channel 4, Film 4, More 4, E4, etc is due to damage caused by a fire suppression system at Red Bee Media's broadcast centre in London, where playout facilities are provided for Channel 4 and various other broadcasters. Following the incident, Channel 4 transferred to backup facilities at another location, however the system which provides subtitles has failed to operate. Work is ongoing to restore subtitles, as well as audio description and sign language, which should be made available once the systems have been restored.

Channel 4 have released a statement, although it doesn't give much information, nor any indication of when subtitles will be working again:

Mr David Fielding: I'm not sure what your question is? Are you asking whether a particular station is available in your area, if so which station? If you put your postcode into the link below it will show you all of the stations predicted to be available at your location.

David Brewer: Nobody from this independent technical help website can investigate a transmitter fault, as nobody posting here has any connection with any broadcaster or transmitter company. Reporting the fault to the radio stations affected might prompt somebody to investigate, particularly if they receive lots of reports of the same problem.

David van der merwe: The Bilsdale transmitter mast was demolished last week, as it was deemed to be beyond repair following the fire back in August. A temporary 80m high mast built in a nearby quarry was switched on yesterday which should restore signal for around 90% of Bilsdale's coverage area. You may need to retune to pick up the new temporary transmitter. From checking your postcode, it looks like you should get a better signal from the Emley Moor transmitter even though it is considerably further away, although that may require turning your aerial by approximately 90 degrees.

Vilma Knight: There are no reports of any faults or engineering work affecting the Oxford transmitter. If the problem is affecting everyone using the communal aerial, you should report it to whoever is responsible for maintaining the system and ask them to send somebody to investigate.

David Rowlandson: Great Christmas Movies channels is carried on the local TV multiplex, which is broadcast from Waltham, however the signal is directional and is only aimed towards Nottingham, so you may not be able to receive it in other areas.

MossMan: Any engineering work which involves reducing the transmitter power temporarily will potentially require other services to be reduced in power or switched off temporarily whilst the work takes place. This is often done for the safety of the engineers working on the transmitter.

Andrew: Do you still get the channels on the old TV if you plug it back in without retuning? We need to know where you are (please provide a full postcode) or which transmitter you're using to be able to check for any reported faults or engineering work.
