In case you aren't already aware, Smithsonian Channel is closing on Freeview, satellite and cable next week, although programmes will still be available via the My5 catchup service.

Nicholas Anderson: Reigate is a full service transmitter, so it will be carrying Talking Picture on COM6. Perhaps the TV you were watching hasn't been retuned for a few years or maybe the aerial is pointed at another transmitter. If you put the postcode in to the detailed checker on the Freeview Corporate site it will show you which transmitters are predicted to be receivable.

Nicholas Anderson: FM listening is declining as people move to listening via DAB and online, the government have already set a target of 2030 for all BBC and commercial FM transmitters to close, although many will have closed before then as there won't be enough listeners to be worth the cost of broadcasting to them.
The lower part of the UHF band is currently only guaranteed to be available for use by Freeview until 2030, the World Radio Conference being held in 2023 will decide the future allocation of the band beyond that. The UK government and Ofcom want the band to remain available for broadcasting but others will lobby for it to be reallocated for telecoms use. The BBC are therefore starting to plan for the possible closure of Freeview in 2030, although it may well be extended by 5-10 years beyond then.

BBC Two Northern Ireland HD has now launched on Sky and Freesat (after several months of testing) where it can now be found on channel 102 on both platform for viewers in the NI region. It has switched places with BBC Two NI SD, which is due to be removed within the next few weeks as part of the BBC's plans for their channels to become HD only on satellite.

Eamonn: Which stations are you listening to when this happens? Does it always cut out in the same location or or does it happen in different places where the signal was OK before?

Miles Thompson: The BBC's HD and SD channels are transmitted on different multiplexes so they cannot be compressing HD channels to fit in SD. The off-air monitoring of PSB3 from Caradon Hill (see link below - North Bovey will be identical) which carries BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD, BBC3 HD, BBC4 HD, CBBC HD, CBeebies HD, ITV1 HD, Channel 4 HD & Channel 5 HD shows them all running at a similar average bitrate. I don't have any other insight into what might be causing your issue

Tim: You'd have to ask the broadcaster (this isn't their website) but my guess is that it's just low cost filler that they already hold rights for so that they have something to show overnight when few people are watching. Numerous channels effectively close down overnight and sell their airtime to teleshopping channels.
