Full technical details of Freeview

Mike O'Sullivan: BBC 4 HD was only broadcast temporarily from Guildford from the start of August until earlier this week in order to provide increased HD Olympic coverage. If you were picking it up before that you must have been receiving the COM7 multiplex from either Crystal Palace or Hannington

David: Nothing was messed up, the message about BBC 4 being in SD on channel 9 was because BBC 4 HD is now only available to around 70% of households via Freeview, as it was before the Olympics.

Full technical details of Freeview

Stuart Swaine: Nothing is messed up, Freeview HD is working exactly as it was designed. The Idle transmitter does not transmit the COM7 multiplex where BBC 4 HD is normally found. BBC 4 HD was temporarily moved to PSB3 (the multiplex which carries BBC 1 HD, BBC 2 HD, ITV HD, Channel 4 HD & Channel 5 HD) which is broadcast from all transmitters in order to provide increased HD coverage of the Olympics, with the moved being reversed earlier this week.

Talking Pictures TV
Sunday 28 August 2016 10:33AM

Brian Lark: Are you able to receive BBC 1 HD on channel 101? Although Talking Pictures is an SD channel it is broadcast on a HD multiplex so you will need a tuner capable of receiving HD channels in order to watch.

All free TV channels in the UK
Sunday 28 August 2016 4:42PM

Chris Welton: Freeview Lite transmitter only transmit the PSB1, PSB2 and PSB3 multiplexes. PSB1 is owned by the BBC and carries all the BBC SD channels and radio stations. PSB2 is owned jointly by ITV (STV in Central & Northern Scotland) and Channel 4 and carries their various channels as well as Channel 5. PSB 3 is operated by the BBC on a commercial basis where some of the capacity is sold to ITV, Channel 4 & Channel 5 for them to broadcast their HD channels.

Which channels listed as available on Freeview Lite are you missing?

Heathfield (East Sussex, England) transmitter
Sunday 28 August 2016 11:15PM

John: No it won't. COM7 is a temporary multiplex which is available from 30 main transmitters (along with COM8) and will close in 2020. It won't be added to any other transmitter, nor will it be increased in transmission power.

Elizabeth: You need an aerial for Freeview as your Sky dish only receives satellite signals. If your TVs already have Freeview built in then you won't need a separate box. Have you checked that you don't have an aerial already on your roof or in the loft? You can split the feed from an aerial to feed as many TVs as you like although you may need an amplifier or powered splitter to overcome the drop in signal strength from splitting the aerial feed. You may be able to get away with using an indoor aerial if you're in a strong signal area but it would be best to consult a professional aerial installer if you need a new aerial fitted.

BBC Four HD
Monday 29 August 2016 11:04PM

Bill McDonald: BBC 4 HD has always been broadcast from Mendip both before and after it's temporary move for the Olympics. Indoor aerials generally work fine in areas of strong signal so presumably you were close to the transmitter in Spain. Freeview works as it was designed, there is no mess for those in charge to sort out.

Robin: BBC 4 HD was only able to be made available during the Olympics because CBBC HD moved to make way for it. There is no permanent capacity available on Freeview Lite transmitters for any additional HD channels.
