Karen McIntyre: Look at this as two separate issues:

First and foremost you might find that you cannot receive the COM channels all the time without difficulty. The COM channels carry ITV3, ITV4, Pick, 4Music, Dave, Yesterday etc. This is because the frequencies used are shared by Divis in Northern Ireland. Unsurprisingly, we have had reports on here of issues like this along the coast, including in Saltcoats and I have made postings about this before:

See here for a full list of Freeview services by multiplex ("Mux"), which are either PSB or COM:

Digital UK Industry - Channel listings

As for the difficulty with reception of PSB2 multiplex (which carries STV, Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV2 and others), this frequency is not shared with Divis, just as PSB1 (BBC TV and radio) is also not.

What you must appreciate is that you do not have line-of-sight with Darvel. From about a mile out the ground drops down to you meaning you are trying to receive what signal is bending around the obstruction:

Terrain between ( m a.g.l.) and (antenna m a.g.l.) - Optimising UK DTT Freeview and Radio aerial location

The lower you are the more likely you're going to have issues, and I see you're in a bungalow with Adams Avenue and the houses on it being higher up, further compounding the issue.

It's not uncommon in such situations to find that the signal comes and goes, as the weather changes, what's on the terrain changes and so on.

jo felt: By "neighbours" if you are referring to others within a block which shares an aerial system then the likely answer would seem to be the aerial system itself, in which case notify the party responsible for it.

Peter Bullivant: That's correct, it's not on Freesat, just as other UKTV channels Dave, Yesterday and Really.

This is probably down to the fact that they are available via satellite through Sky's subscription platform. It's a reasonable assumption that if they were to become free-to-air via satellite then they won't receive the revenue they do from Sky for being on its subscription service.

As you are within an area where you can get these services on Freeview (not everyone is) then watch them on Freeview.

Briantist: Am I right in thinking that these will be right because effectively the radiation patterns are published by Ofcom in its tech parameters spreadsheet? (These being attenuation figures every 10 degrees.)

Jerry: See:

Ofcom | Radio Broadcast Update January 2015

Removal of Kiss from Swindon and West Wiltshire multiplex.

This is probably because it's available on the D1 National commercial multiplex. Can you receive it?

I checked Radio & TV Investigation Service and Digital UK and neither report a problem. I also checked SSE Distribution's power outage checker and no fault is recorded for the transmitter site. Sunday's an odd day for engineering work, I would have thought.

So I'm none the wiser...

maloner: It may well support HD/MPEG4 but is the tuner DVB-T2? If not then that will explain the reason why you can't get it.

Of course PSB3 is at 20kW. All PSBs are at the same power so as to offer the same coverage; it's the COMs which are inferior and on lower power.

david o'keefe: As some blocks of flats are within your postcode, the obvious question must be: are you in them and are you served by a communal aerial system, as, if you are then the likely candidate must be that system. If so, then it needs reporting to the party responsible (e.g. landlord) in order to get it fixed.

Dale Elliott: No, which is why there is a "" underneath the Freesat logo near the top of this page.

Ceri: Not necessarily. A booster will only help in cases where the signal isn't strong enough. If the signal is of insufficient quality then it won't help.

If it's pointing to Usk then be aware that the three channels (frequencies) it uses as the same as used by Mendip for its COM channels (those you can't get from Usk), albeit that Mendip's horizontally polarised and Usk is vertically so.

On looking at StreetView there are an awful lot of aerials facing Mendip. This, and the prediction from Digital UK, therefore makes me wonder whether the issue is interference from Mendip.

If this is the case then maybe moving the aerial to somewhere that the Mendip signal isn't likely to be as strong, but where there is still line-of-sight (albeit through the roof tiles) to the Usk transmitter.
