rebecca hillier: You cannot use "Sky" boxes for "Freeview" because the latter is the system that comes from terrestrial transmitters and the former is a satellite service.

In order to view the non-subscription channels via the Sky box(es), you will need to run feeds from your satellite dish to the location of the box(es). Your LNB (the bit on the end of the dish's arm from which the cables are connected) may have spare ports (spare connections) else you may have to look at getting a new LNB with more ports these being available from online sources for around £10.

Martin Boulton: I should assume so. Refer to:

Backwell is the only transmitter near to Wraxall.

C49 is the frequency of the signal from Mendip rather than from Backwell.

The signal from Mendip isn't that good in the general area which is why the Backwell relay transmitter was installed.

If you happen to live in a spot where reception of Mendip is possible (with a suitably installed aerial) then you may be able to receive the full complement of Freeview channels from it. If not then an aerial on Wenvoe (the transmitter near Cardiff) and one on Backwell will give you West programming and the Commercial (COM) channels that Backwell doesn't carry.

A.R. Etheridge: Try a retune now.

There is a Digital UK newsletter which gives the expected time that retune can be carried out for Box to be "after 3pm".

Louise Irvine: The thing with a communal aerial system is that one needs to establish whether the issue is with the system or the receiver. If it's the former then it's beyond your control and the responsibility lies with whoever maintains the aerial system.

I am assuming here that the aerial sockets in your flat are all part of the system and that you aren't provided with one, say in the lounge, from which you've run cables to the other rooms.

If these are sockets provided as part of the system then maybe you could take the troublesome TV to the other sockets and try it there. Maybe us a different aerial lead so as to disprove that as being a possible cause.

If the guys are still there then I would advise you put the kettle on and ask them if they wouldn't mind taking a look.

jane: I am assuming that you are receiving from (or should be receiving from) the Washford transmitter. The frequency of ITV, C4, C5 etc (all the same frequency) is changing or has changed.

Try a manual tune on UHF channel 50.

Failing that, I note that your postcode resolves to an address that could have a communal aerial. Perhaps the aerial system needs adjustment to take account of the new frequency.

chris myers: There has been some changes to frequencies from the Portishead relay and its parent, Mendip.

According to Digital UK, both these transmitters are working again now.

Andrew: Yes, you may be able to manually tune, but without any idea along the border you might be it isn't possible to say which transmitter in England you may have been picking up!

Louise Irvine: I don't think there's much more to suggest. It may be worth trying the troublesome TV directly into the aerial wall socket (without the cables that feed different rooms connected). Failing that, perhaps stick with PSB-only Tay Bridge via the set-top aerial.

From Angus, there are six broadcast channels (frequencies/signals), including the HD one. Does it affect them all?

PSB1 - BBC One
PSB2 - STV
PSB3 - BBC One HD
COM4 - ITV3
COM5 - Pick TV
COM6 - Film4

Richard James: But clearly once the powers that be had one retune, it became a bit like an itch that has to be scratched.

You may be able to miss out Wenvoe by having the aerial unplugged for the first 55% of the scan. If you have the aerial out too long, you may miss out BBC from Mendip which a manual tune on C49 should sort.

chris myers: It does seem strange that you get nothing after the change.

The change from Mendip only affected BBC standard definition TV and radio services, therefore when you turned on your TV today all others (ITV, C4 etc) should have been present.

If you are feeding the signal from your aerial to several points/rooms then is it a powered amplifier/booster and might that have failed or be without power? Don't assume that because the light is on that it is working.
