What Digital switchover means to you
Tuesday 19 April 2011 5:52PM

Hi
I'm one of the people in Brighton (Hove actually!) on the seafront, who is screened from the main Whitehawk transmitter. Analogue reception has been acceptable across the water from Rowridge although it is fringe. Freeview reception from Rowridge has not been possible due to the low powers involved. After March 2012 do you think that the increased digital power from Rowridge is likely to be enough to serve Brighton and Hove seafronts?
Thanks Arnie

Many thanks Briantist. I'm rather pleased that we won't be getting London news!

This morning DAB radio reception on three portables around the flat here on the seafront, is really poor, with signal errors showing double their normal levels. Iwonder if switchover engineering work at Whitehawk could be affecting DAB transmissions? I am guessing that the DAB aerials are on the same mast?

Ok, thanks everyone. Maybe some scaffolding on a neighbouring building is the cause.

Wasn't the EMI deveoped 405 line television system generally known as High Definition television, as opposed to the Baird mechanical system?

On the subject of frame sync pulses, I remember an entry in the Thames Tv Duty manager's log one evening: "Broads with rounded bottoms caused havoc tonight" referring to a fault with the SPG!

Freeview HD sales top 3 million | High definition

I am puzzled as to why there are so few new small screen (around 19inch) TVs with DVB-T2 tuners. Now that the whole country is within weeks of digital switchover completion, this does seem particularly strange. Most people who want a small screen set for a bedroom or study do not want the clutter of a separate Freeview HD box.

Are the manufacturers deciding for us that it isn't worth watching HD on a small screen set? If so, I strongly disagree!

Did anyone else build the late seventies Wireless World Teletext decoder - crammed full of TTL chips needing about 5 amps at 5 volts!

The data slice level was not automatic and I ended up modifying it with a large control knob on the front that had to be tweaked for minimum spelling mistakes!

I've seen a few new substantial aerial installations on Hove seafront (noticeably Brunswick Terrace) with Horizontally polarised elements, apparently directed to Whitehawk Hill. This cannot be an installation error can it? Are there any dual polarised services from Whitehawk? I'm sure we are out of range of the very low power central Brighton relay, and that wouldn't be in exactly the same direction.

Thanks Dave.
The sea air and strong winds do take their toll here. Aerial installations seem to only last about three years on average! It's a pity I can't upload a photo. Maybe the riggers didn't have the right brackets with them one day and thought that enough signal would still get in with the wrong polarisation.

The DAB signal seems to be intermittently dropping to zero with a lower than usual signal strength the remaining time. Rooftop 3 element aerial at BN2 8HX
