I do not believe Sky is perfect but they do produce some excellant programes. The coverage of F1 is miles better than that of the BBC. Sky news is ahead of the BBC news which is now very dumbed down

The real issue is the BBC licence fee which means BBC income is limited. If the BBC was set free from the restrictions of the licence fee it would be free to create better programs.

Having problems with TV background music?
Tuesday 28 October 2014 2:57PM

I don't have much of a problem with background music but at times the noise made by suppoerters at football matches. It's not so much a problem with with surround sound but ITV, BBC, and channel 5 use stereo.

For me the worst sound issue is with the BBC who have at times have produced some realy awfull muffelled sound which generated alot of complaints. Another issue with the BBC is the variation of sound levels within some programs which need continuous fiddling with the volume control. Another issue is the variation of sound levels when switching between stereo and 5.1 but this may be a decoder problem.

The adoption of Dolby and AAC has certainly improved the sound quality on the HD channels. Unfortunatly many programs lack bass and the higher frequencies.

What is in store for the next round of BBC cuts?
Thursday 11 December 2014 10:37AM

Cut backs are not the answer. This will just degrade BBC output to an even lower quality. The only solution is to
abandon the licence fee and free the BBC to raise income by other means. The sale of the BBC would also raise a significant amount to set against the deficite.

How do the two new national DAB radio bids compare?
Wednesday 11 February 2015 12:27AM

You said DAB listening is overtaking analogue.

I say rubbish!

Rajar says

The share of listening to DAB has increased by 6% year on year to 25.2% of all listening.

Listening online is increasing at a much faster rate.

DAB is dead long live FM and the Internet.

How do the two new national DAB radio bids compare?

@brianist

Yes but you said "DAB listening overtaking analogue" which is not true. I have a digital radio with a DAB tuner but I never listen to DAB because I can't stand the apawling sound quality. Internet is the future of radio because it is extremely versatile, can provide lossless audio, and an massive choice of radio from around the world. As we know the last time an attempt was made for a second multiplex failed. I just do not believe that a second multipex is commercially viable and so this one will eventually fail. It would be illeagle for the government to subsidise this multiplex under European laws.

How do the two new national DAB radio bids compare?
Saturday 21 February 2015 10:14AM

As I have been saying for decades FM national stations will not be turned off for the foreseeable future.

Just look at the complaints the BBC got when they switched off some of their AAC radio streams recently. The BBC changed to HLS streaming which won't work with most internet radios. They forgot to notify many radio manufactures who are now striving to support the streams. They didn't consult radio for the blind and so many blind people have been cut off from radio.

The test transmission was 96kb/s mp2 so very poor audio quality and most local stations are in mono.

The BBC are now transmitting the local radio stations at 320kb/s AAC (HLS) on the internet. Mind these streams are not compatable with internet radios but can be received on PCs and smartphones.

Nearly all of these so called "Stars" have a financial interest in the BBC.

Why should the views of "Stars" carry more weight than those of Licence Payers.

It turns out this letter was produced by the BBC by phoning known supporters.
