Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Great Massingham (Norfolk, England) mast?

No problems on any service. BBC

UK Free TV shows the coverage area for a radio transmitter as a coloured overlay (orange for FM, other colours for DAB) on the grey map. We have computed the coverage by combining the terrain with the official radiation pattern. A single click will select the transmitter to view the coverage for a single site, and a double click goes to a page showing full details. Click on the buttons in the right-hand corner of the map to choose from different frequencies (or multiplexes for DAB).

P Howcroft: Good morning Mister Howcroft. Firstly, may I correct you on the date in your post? We haven't reached June 16 yet - today is only June 7th! I think you meant June 6, i.e. yesterday! As you leave Swaffham and head westwards towards King's Lynn, you are tending to rely on the Great Massingham transmitter for your digital radio signals. This transmitter has no reported problems or works being undertaken, but you may be suffering from interference due to the current high pressure atmospheric conditions. Things will improve when the weather changes. You'll also be pleased to know that the BBC are currently engaged in a plan called 'DAB Phase 4', which is an expansion of coverage, both indoor and mobile, of BBC National stations on DAB. This is due to complete before the end of 2016. Hope this information helps. Richard, Norwich, Tuesday 7th. June 2016 at 9 a.m.

Gerald Cant: Hi, Gerald. In order for Radio Norfolk or KLFM to be on DAB in King's Lynn and West Norfolk there has to be a commercial company willing to run a King's Lynn and West Norfolk local DAB multiplex, such as Now Digital, who run the Norwich one and Muxco who run the Lincolnshire one and have been approved to run the Suffolk one. The company has to believe that the local multiplex will be commercially viable for them, then, when Ofcom asks, companies that are interested submit their proposals to Ofcom for approval. As a 'for instance' which might help with your question, Muxco applied to Ofcom for the Suffolk multiplex in 2015, didn't learn that they had been approved until the Autumn and it will be October this year before they go on the air with Suffolk DAB stations, so you can see that it's all a rather long, drawn-out process. The regulator Ofcom has not even advertised for interested parties to apply for a King's Lynn and West Norfolk local DAB multiplex yet as far as I know, although the eventual aim is for local DAB to achieve the same coverage as the primary local FM station in every area, which, in your case, is KLFM, so it should happen eventually, but when is an unknown at the moment. Hope this helps, Richard, Norwich.

Richard Cooper: There will not be a Kings Lynn/West Norfolk DAB multiplex, the official Now Norwich DAB multiplex area has now been expanded to cover the whole of the county. The present local DAB expansion funding agreement only covers the heritage FM station areas, so this is the area covered by Heart Norfolk (formerly Broadland). The west of the county will only be covered by Now Norfolk after a new funding arrangement is agreed, probably after a digital switchover decision (expected in 2018).

mark: Hi Mark. Thank you for updating me on the situation with Kings Lynn/West Norfolk local DAB. I did not realise that Now Norwich has been expanded to cover the whole county, nor that the funding agreement only covered the first local FM areas to have gone on air back in the 1970s and early 80s. Of course, KLFM is more recent, not going on air until July 1992 and so not qualifying for funding as a heritage station area. I was also interested to hear you say that a DSO decision is expected in 2018, and was wondering what was your source of information that enabled you to be so precise, bearing in mind other people have been saying after the new BBC Charter is in place, or something as vague as "between now and 2020". Richard, Norwich.

Richard Cooper: Hi Richard, the culture minister Ed Vaizey has said that a decision on switchover will be taken by the Government when overall digital listening reaches 50%. At the present rate of growth this is expected to be achieved in late 2017 or early 2018 (it's currently 44%). The three analogue commercial radio licences (Classic FM, Talksport & Absolute Radio) expire in 2023, so it's possible that switchover could take place during that year, with an announcement being made in 2018.

Gerald Cant: Update: Oct/Nov 2021. New DAB transmitter proposed at Gayton, plus use of existing comms tower in KL to transmit Small Scale DAB for KL ~7 villages to the East. I don't yet know which BAND III channel will be used but this ought to be made public when the new transmitters are turned on. Within the coverage area, an AUTOTUNE should find these new signals, so look out for news in local press, radio and tv, during Oct /Nov. 2021.

There's the possibility it could be Block 9C but that's to be confirmed.
