Could you please let me know if there is a reason why the DAB signal on my car radio, in the Middlesbrough / Billingham area, often cuts out at 8:00 in the morning. This is when I am on my way to work and not before or after that time
It does not seem to matter where abouts in the journey I am. It can be on the Tees flyover, where there is no blockage anywhere to the signal, or in the middle of town but always at the same time

Hi, hope someone can help me, I've scoured the internet and found nothing! My daughter is hoping to move into a flat in Whitby. The letting agent told us the signal there is pretty useless and she won't be able to get freeview. However, as it's a listed building she can't have a satellite dish so is there anything she can do to actually receive any programmes? Thank you in anticipation.

Yvonne: As you probably know, Whitby is now poorly served by terrestrial television following the debacle in which the transmitter was resited to the back of beyond in 2007.
The Whitby relay transmitter will start broadcasting Freeview in September, but it will carry only Public Service channels. These are BBC, ITV1, ITV1+1, ITV2, Channel 4, E4, More 4, Channel 5 and the four HD services.
There will be no Dave, Film 4, ITV3, ITV4 etc. Only main stations such as Bilsdale carry these.
Is there a TV aerial and is it just satellite dishes that aren't allowed?
Where abouts is she thinking of moving?

Yvonne: If your daughters flat is located in the lower down areas on the same level as the marina then she most likely wont be able to receive Freeview thanks to the residents having been somewhat foolishly given a choice where the replacement transmitter was sited.
However the only option she would then have is to use an online service "if" the flat is located in an area where that service exists, but it is still possible to use a smaller satellite dish kit indoors if your daughters window is Southerly facing and she is NOT located on the opposite side of the marina to where the Co-op building is situated, so if you could provide her post code or one from very nearby (a pub etc) then this could be checked out.

Yvonne: The prediction for the postcode you've provided suggests an excellent chance of getting reliable reception from the Whitby transmitter. This will provide the PSB multiplexes only after switchover in September - see references to 'Freeview Lite' or 'Freeview Light' elsewhere on this site, or the Whitby transmitter page, to see what channels will be available.
It's very unlikely that a full service from Bilsdale will be possible at that postcode, even after switchover completes. The chances of even getting the PSBs reliably are very low indeed. Currently, Whitby only provides BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1 and Channel 4 on analogue - Freeview is only currently available from Bilsdale in your area.

Yvonne: Just out of curiosity, could you please clarify if the code you provided is applicable to your own residence or that of where your daughter is hoping to move into? as the content of my reply was based on it not being the latter, not of course that it would make much difference unless she was located in the slightly higher level parts of the town where the reception from the Whitby analogue relay isn't quite so iffy.

Dave, jb, Mike, thanks for your responses. We live in Redcar at the moment, my daughter is moving to Whitby to work at the new Sainsburys being built. The flat she's hoping to get is in Church Street Whitby, it's a top floor flat facing the harbour with a communal rooftop aerial, I noticed there was a BT Openreach phone point and the agent said the previous tenant used BT Vision but having looked into that it seems that uses freeview channels so probably isn't viable.

Yvonne: Yes, a BT vision box is in effect a Freeview box but with a broadband connection so that video can be viewed on-line, and so I feel that's what the agent was possibly meaning as Freeview is not presently available, although this BT Vision via on-line broadband is done on a monthly contract basis and so the costs can add up, so your daughter has to beware of that fact.
Obviously you did provide the code for your daughters proposed flat, the only reason I enquired was that many people when enquiring on behalf of someone else usually forgets and provides their own code rather than the other persons, you of course not having done.
All that's been said by Mike Dimmick and Dave Lindsay applies to that Church Street code, with myself being quite acquaint with the Church street area as I am up in the Whitby area every three months or so, and generally have lunch in the fish & chip restaurant located at the bend in Church street where it leads down to the bridge.
