I had reasonable digital service with a wideband aerial aligned to Crystal Palace. This gave over 130 channels though some were not good. After Digital cutover I retuned and got about 40 but only 3 or 4 were watchable - the rest broke up with No Signal. We have trees all around us so I bought the best high gain aerial and installed it on the existing 4M pole using a decent signal meter. But the signal was terrible! I was advised by one of the Digital Cutover support personnel that the power from Crystal Palace had been reduced and to try Hemel Hempstead so adjusted the polarisation to vertical. No signal. So I have now reverted to Crystal Palace and hope a 6M pole will help. But am I wasting my time waiting for them to turn the power up again? Have they changed the position/alignment of the aerials at Crystal Palace?

Hi, I live in Bushey WD23 1BY I have purchased an aerial, it is a screwfix jobbiw, im sure it is high gain, i dont understand all th lingo to do with aerials but i assume i can tune in to Hemel hempstead or Crystal Palace or Sandy Heats(where ever that is) my questions are : What transmitter would be best for me, and do i mount in horizintally ir vertically and also is this serial type ok for all 3 transmitters?
I appreciate your help
Ohh and also i have a compass but how do i know the bearing to each transmitter from ehre i live , is there a generic list somewhere?

Chris: I can see you having some problems with what you are trying to achieve as not one single station indicates good reception across all six multiplex channels, as Sandy (@ 34 miles / 6 degrees) indicates the three comm channels (51 - 48 - 52) as OK but with the PSB's (27 - 24 - 21HD) indicated as variable, whereas Crystal Palace (@ 19 miles / 139 degrees) indicates the PSB's (23 - 26 - 30HD) as being OK but not the comm's (25 - 22 - 28) which are indicated as variable.
By the way the aerial in both cases being mounted horizontally.
Hemel Hemstead (@ 7miles / 333 degrees) might be reasonably OK for reception with the exception of SDN (ITV3 etc) and ArqB (Yesterday / Film4 etc) as these two muxes are indicated as poor. By the way Hemels aerial being mounted vertically.
Receiving PSB's from one transmitter and Comms from another at the same time is not so difficult to do if the stations are located at roughly 180 degrees from each other, as the signal levels received from the rear in many aerials is not always that terribly much less than from the face of the aerial, but as you can see this does not apply in your situation because of the angles involved.
I really think that its best that you just carry out some experiments to see just exactly what you can receive from the same station, as predictors are not necessarily 100% accurate by any means, as they cannot cater for local reception conditions.

Rob,Chesham.Crystal Palace is an all group A transmitter,using any form of a group W wideband aerial (coloured black at the tips) on an all group A mast in a poor reception/marginal reception area such as from your abode to Crystal Palace mast itself is the perfect recipe for bad/poor/no reception as such.
Because group W wideband aerials no matter what myth that it is a high gain aerial is really not a high gain aerial as such,they (group W widebands,tipped black) perform badly on group A frequencies,more so on all group A transmitters/relays,etc,in a poor/marginal signal area.
You are using the wrong type of aerial a group W wideband on all group A Crystal Palace transmitter in a poor/marginal area,so the correct aerial you should be using is a red tipped group A X-Beam XB16A aerial aimed at Crystal Palace,utilising copper-copper satellite grade black coloured co-ax cable,and importantly using brass co-ax aerial plug for longevity,not alloy or worse plastic plugs as they're useless.

Hi Shaun Here i live in Slough and i seem to get a signal from Bedmond when i would like it to be recieving from Hannington which is the one that all of the people around me are connected too if there not connected to crystal palace do u have a sollution to this as my areal is actually pointing towards hannington??

About two weeks ago I started losing some Freeview channels. I have since discovered that they are all Ch50 which is showing up as about 50% signal strength and poor signal quality (about 10%). All other channels are good. Has something happened to the hemel Hempstead transmitter? Signal checked on current model Panasonic TV and Humax HD PVR. Aerial is sited in loft and has been fine until two weeks ago. Post code WD23 3PX

Douglas John Keen: If you are located anywhere near to Colney post office (Co-op) then the Hemel Hempstead transmitter is located @ 6 miles on a bearing of 272 degrees, the aerial group being either E or wideband and with it being mounted vertically, elements up and down.
By the way group E being identified by it having a brown plastic end blanking plug on the horizontal arm that holds the elements.

Re-tuned my dvd recorder and TV about two months ago after message came up to do so. My TV is fine but the dvd has not worked since. Have tried retuning many times-have also been through hoops of fire with BBC,Samsung(makers of the DVD-model 893m)and the local aerial installer. All sorts of suggestions none of which have worked-DVD was fine for the previous three years. Any suggestions?

Denis Turton: Well I for one would have been interested to know if anything was indicated on the signal test screen if you selected the "manual tuning" menu and entered the BBC mux channel number used by the station that covers your area into the box provided, but though with this action NOT being followed by pressing search or scan as by not doing causes the tuner to act like a form of signal meter free of threshold restrictions, and so I wondered if the signal strength would be indicated but accompanied by zero quality? or possibly with nothing at all being seen?
My only reason for being curious as to what might be seen being due to the fact that Samsung tuners do not really come into the category of being totally reliable devices, and the action of retuning could have triggered a problem within the tuner.
However as your area is unknown by you not having provided a post code or at least one from nearby such as a shop / post office, I am unable to advise with regards to the channel number to enter.
By the way, all said being on the assumption that your model does have a signal check screen?
