Can't believe Wycombe is getting free view light, what a washout.

Currently I can get free view from my roof aerial from another transmitter, I assume that when the Wycombe aerial is turned on it wont "override" the current signal?

aron: The commercial broadcasters are only required to provide at least as much coverage as they did before switchover started. They have decided not to extend their services to any further transmitters at this stage.

High Wycombe is joint-31st in terms of household coverage, of transmitters that do not carry the commercial multiplexes. There are five transmitters that do, which are predicted to serve fewer households, but - with the exception of Saddleworth - they are all in the Scottish Islands and were considered 'main' transmitters in the analogue network. The coverage statistics are for 'preferred' transmitters, a service from a main transmitter may still be possible.

Most households in High Wycombe are probably covered by the main transmitter at Crystal Palace. This will be getting a significant power boost to increase the digital coverage area to the same as the analogue one, or even a bit larger. Receivers can be desensitised with loud transmissions on adjacent channels, but High Wycombe's broadcasts are right up at the other end of the spectrum from Crystal Palace's.

There are also 'Freeview Lite' relays at West Wycombe, Chepping Wycombe and Micklefield, indicating that this may be a difficult area for reception from Crystal Palace.

**but High Wycombe's broadcasts are right up at the other end of the spectrum from Crystal Palace's.**

So does this mean the Wycombe transmitter works on a different frequency and won't override the crystal palace signal I can currently receive?

I'm in Downley and have been able to get Freeview for 2-3 years now with a couple of different boxes I've had, some of the channels are a bit iffy and even the sound sometimes briefly cuts out on BBC channels (but more-so with Channel 4 onwards) but it all works reasonably ok. Could be because I'm on top of the hill right near the transmitter?.. or could it be because I'm up high that I can pick up Crystal Palace from here?

Qwerty: The answer is because you are on a hill and can therefore receive from Crystal Palace.

The High Wycombe transmitter does not currently broadcast digital services and after switchover it will be a Public Service only transmitter. That means it will carry only BBC, ITV1, ITV2, Channel 4, E4, More 4, Channel 5, HD channels and a few others.

So those in the valley who consequently can't receive directly from Crystal Palace will not get ITV3, Film 4, Dave, Pick TV etc.

The only possibility you may have when switchover happens is that your receiver may tune to the High Wycombe transmitter for the services that it carries. The way around this is to only have the aerial plugged in for only the first 30% of the automatic tuning scan. I am assuming here that your aerial is directed to Crystal Palace (it will be horizontal) and not High Wycombe (it will be vertical).

Is the Wycombe signal at full strength, or will it improve on the 18th (trying to pick it up with another TV and set top aerial)?

And also, maybe not related to this page, I understand the crystal palace HD signal will be boosted on the changeover, has that happened, or will that be the 18th?

aron: High Wycombe is now on full strength for BBC. Indeed, BBC standard definition digital services are the only digital ones it carries now.

On 18th Wycombe will carry the other Public Service multiplexes which include ITV1, ITV2, Channel 4, E4, More 4, Channel 5, HD services and a few others. It will not be a full Freeview transmitter.

Shame, On a set top aerial I lose the signal every time a fly farts, I was hoping I wouldn't have to run cables through the house to split the main aerial signal to both TV's
