Qwerty: I would suggest you need to see How digital television works | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice - which doesn't include any frequencies at all, but encoded bits.
Far be it from me to suggest medical advice, I am not qualified to do so, but I would see Tinnitus - NHS Choices .

Thanks for your reply jb38, however I'm not sure how to do the signal test you mentioned. Not really necessary now anyway as today I discovered that my TV will display the frequencies found if I go into the manual tuning option. Having found this I reconnected the aerial and did a rescan to find that now it only finds the three mux you'd expect! I think I'm just going to put it down to a switchover day anomaly. I'm now back to using my set-top aerial pointing to Crystal Palace so that I can get all channels including HD.

Gary: This is most unlikely, as when the owners of the COM muxes were asked if they wished to extend coverage to any of the relay transmitters they declined on the basis that the extra cost would not be justified for the small number of viewers that would be added to the service. Your best option for receiving the COM muxes is to see if a signal is available from Crystal Palace or Hannington. Satellite reception would give you ITV3, ITV4, Film4, 5*, 5USA, Sky News and loads of shopping channels, but most of the entertainment channels on the COM muxes are Sky subscription channels on satellite.

Gary: It is a shame that they are not relaying all Freeview. It gives it a bad name and everyone says 'Sat or Sky is better' and this proves them right.
We cannot get Crystal Palace from where we are so yes this is better than before DSO but it is disappointing. Thanks for the info. cheers

Gary.No probs,glad to assist you !
Then again you could always consider Freesat which gives you obviously more choice than limited Freeview from minor relays that only broadcast PSB multiplexes, but not COM multiplexes due to high cost levels.
