I wonder if you can help me? I have had a STB since 2007 at DY13 0NS which using a vertical aerial pointing at kidderminster with a booster picked up pretty good digital until Nov last year. Generally signal was about 25% and is now 100% on BBC & ITV but still low on Dave, Yesterday and More 4, ie channel 44 and 47. I retune quite often with out asny improvement so how can I improve this and if I loose BBC with a car going by could that be the old cable?

Jonathan Pargeter:

The Kidderminster transmitter does not broadcast on UHF channels 44 and 47, so I'm guessing these are being picked up from the Bromsgrove transmitter. Kidderminster is a "Freeview Lite" transmitter and does not carry commercial multiplexes so Dave, Yesterday, etc are impossible from that transmitter. I think if your (vertically mounted) aerial was repositioned to a bearing of 76 degrees from your house, you would get all six multiplexes with ease. However, I do not know what trees/buildings may be in the way. It might be an idea to contact an installer to ask hime his advice, or perhaps talk to neighbours to compare their experiences.

Hope this helps,

Just one more thing, you might need to change your aerial for a widebannd one, although I'm guessing that because you are so close to the Kidderminster transmitter your PSB multiplexes (BBC1, ITV1,etc) would still be picked up from Kidderminster and the COM multiplexes (Dave, etc) picked up from Bromsgrove.

I see that the BBC programmes are off air from the Kidderminster transmitter at present (from 17.23 today, 29 Feb. 2012). Where can I find an explanation why? Is the interruption temporary or permanent? Is there anything I need to do?

D A Patterson: Have you considered having an aerial pointing at Sutton Coldfield? This would give you all the Freeview channels instead of just the PSB muxes. Also , as the main transmitter for the West Midlands it is better able to provide a reliable service with its back up provision.

Currently have no signal on Freeview in Kidderminster and retuning doesn't solve this. This has happened before. Anybody heard why and long this will be for?

Paul: If you use a signal amplifier, whether it be as part of a communal aerial system or to distribute to signals to multiple rooms, its failure is likely to mean no signals coming out.

J. Mooney: 2km from a transmitter and you have a signal booster? Can I ask why?

J. Mooney: I wouldn't think that a booster should be required at 1 mile from a 400W transmitter, unless perhaps for the purpose of distributing to more than one room.

Have you tried removing the booster?

Are you unable to receive all channels from Sutton Coldfield? I looked on Streetview at your road and all the aerial I can see are on Sutton Coldfield. They are higher gain and higher up than normal, so reception isn't easy.

With Kidderminster you only receive the Public Service (PSB) channels.

Also, check that the TV is tuned to Kidderminster transmitter and not Sutton Coldfield. Bring up the signal strength screen on the following and observe the UHF channel number that it is tuned to:

BBC One = C49 for Kidderminster; C43 for Sutton Coldfield

ITV = C58 for Kidderminster; C46 for Sutton Coldfield

BBC One HD = C54 for Kidderminster; C40 for Sutton Coldfield

If you have ITV3, Pick TV or 4Music then these must be coming from Sutton Coldfield as Kidderminster doesn't carry them.
