Barrie - one thing you will not get, unless you use your Skydish for it, is the right BBC regional news for your area. Ridge Hill only carries midlands BBC news (whereas it does carry ITV west).
Coleford has a west relay, and if that is out of reach, then Mendip is receivable in other parts of the town. Both of these transmit BBC West, which editorially covers the Forest.

Barrie Etherington: Ridge Hill is a full-freeview transmitter (it broadcasts Public Service [PSB] and Commercial [COM] channels).
Sky Sports on digital terrestrial, for use with BT Vision, are carried on one of the COM channels:
DTG :: DTT Services by Multiplex
The COM channels from Ridge Hill are on lower power than the PSBs, so if you find them to be an issue you may need to replace your aerial, either with another on Ridge Hill or one on Mendip.
Mendip will give you BBC One West and ITV West. Ridge Hill will give you BBC One West Midlands, ITV Central (South) and ITV West (it carries two PSB2 multiplexes, but only the West Midlands PSB1 one).
If Mendip isn't a possibility and you want BBC One West then you will probably have to pick it up from the Coleford relay, but it only carries PSB channels (so no Sky Sports). In which case, diplex (combine) it with the Ridge Hill one, if you can get the COM channels from there else there's not much point, unless you want to have access to West and West Midlands programming.

Mr Etherington, I live in Cinderford and would be more than happy to discuss anything with you face to face. My advice is free and so it won't cost you a penny!
Regards
Andy

Betty:
You are in a location where your aerial can receive from multiple transmitters.
When this happen the system can get confused about which signal to use.
I would suggest you either get an aerial fitted which is specific to your location therefore blocking all other signals or use a GROUP FILTER to block out unwanted receptions from other transmitters.
As you are also having issues with the amount of channels being received you could have a problem with other parts of the system.
Not really something a DIYer could fix.
