Which companies have run the Channel 3 services in the Pontop Pike transmitter area
Since pontop was changed over recently and we done a retune, the picture is definitely worse. Why?
The aerial is outside. Facing pontop and it was fine till recently. I also have an aerial facing shotleyfield but the digital channels available from there are far less. Why?

John geoghegan: If by being worse you mean the picture is breaking up, putting aside possible interference to the signal being received, this indicates that the signal is either too weak or too strong- the symptoms are similar when viewing the TV. Firstly check that the correct frequency has been tuned in for the transmitter that the aerial is pointing to. This is C58 for Pontop Pike. It is possible that the tuner found Newton or Shotley Field signals first during the scan, then ignored the correct one from Pontop. If, on the other hand, the correct frequency is found to have been selected, the new high power signal could be too strong if you have amplification on the aerial or a very high gain aerial. In this case you would need to reduce the gain of the amplifier (if possible) or fit an attenuator in the aerial feed to the receiver. You might be best to wait for DSO2 to complete before making any changes to your aerial if this should prove necessary. Regarding the channels transmitted from each mast, Shotleyfield is a public service relay transmitter which is only required to supply the BBC channels and ITV1, C4 and Channel Five. Other channels carried on mux PSB2 are a bonus. The COM muxes are a commercial venture from SDN (owned by ITV) and Arqiva. The mux owners opted not to increase the number of sites served as the transmission costs would have doubled for an increase of 8% in the number of viewers served.

James: Two points concerning your problem, and which has to be in general terms because as no post code (or one from nearby, e.g: a shop) was given I am unable to access the reception predictor, and so as a substitute I used your local post office as a test code.
Your problem could be caused by your TV or box having picked up the Shotleyfield transmitter during an auto tune rather than Pontop Pike, this because the former uses lower channel numbers than the latter, the snag with Shotleyfield being that it does not transmit the commercial muxes as its only a PSB relay.
For a test you should remove the aerial connector and carry out an auto tune for purposes of deleting anything stored, then once completed take hold of the aerial plug again but do NOT insert it as yet, because you have to carry out another auto tune but this time carefully observe the progress bar whilst the auto tune is taking place, then as soon as the bar has reached about 50% of its travel immediately reinsert the aerial plug again and allow the scan to complete.
The reason for using this procedure is to avoid Shotleyfield being picked up as it uses lower channel numbers (22-28) hence keeping the aerial out until this section is passed, then hopefully you will pick up all channels from Pontop Pike, these spanning from 49 (HD) - 59.
If by any chance this still does not have the desired effect then your TV or boxes tuner could be receiving an excessively high level of signal from Pontop Pike located at only about 3 miles or so away, and an "over the top" signal can result in all sorts of odd problems being experienced including no picture at all being received and caused by the tuner being swamped.
Further advice dependant on results.

Some viewers will be able to switch from using the local relay to the main station such as from Shotleyfield to Pontop Pike.
In the days of analogue it would have been a question of which transmitter is the easiest to receive from with both providing equal service in the form of the four channels. The fact that the relay was chosen then doesn't necessarily mean that the full service from the main station isn't available now, although it may require a more extravagent aerial to pick it up.
I don't know whether you live in a location that might be able to receive the full service from Pontop. I appreciate that you said that you are unable to pick it up, but I wonder if you say that simply because you have always used Shotleyfield.
The terrain plot shows that you live only 3.6 miles from Pontop Pike but cannot see it:

Also, on the slope there are buildings in the way which isn't good.
