I've mentioned before that I live in a flat and the communal roof aerial is pointing to Winter Hill. In my loft, I have a tv set top aerial connected to an amplifier that receives excellent signals from The Wrekin, Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield.
For some strange reason, I have never been able to get a decent picture from having an outdoor aerial fitted in the loft yet I can get great pictures from a set-top aerial!
Why is this?
I have tried in turn 10, 32 and 48 element aerials. Using an amplifier makes the picture worse. I am using good quality satellite grade coax cable so why is such a little indoor aerial capable of giving better results than an outdoor aerial?
It's got me baffled!
I wanted to use an outdoor aerial in the loft instead of the set-top type because that aerial is mounted on top of some boxes to give it more height and improved reception which doesn't look and feel all that great or safe and an outdoor type would look better and thought it would further improve reception but this has not been the case.
Would anyone be able to tell me why I am experiencing such unexpected results?
Hope to have an answer soon.
Thanks,
Stuart.

Jm F: Hi, Since switchover, we are plagued by pixellation! Most days, watching BBC1 programmes is really difficult and often, bordering impossible - feezing and total pixellation. This is not just on BBC but other channels, too.
Is this weak signal reception or likely equipment failure? We're using a Freeview box with SKY dish and live in Bromsgrove, near Lickey Hills area.
Any help you can suggest will be most gratefully received. Many thanks, Therese

Hi Therese,
Need to clarify what equipment you're using - satellite dish would equate to Sky or Freesat (i.e. not Freeview, which is received via an aerial).
If you have a Freesat box and are getting pixellation, it could be the dish alignment, a dodgy LNB, trees / leaves limiting the "view" of the satellite, or a dodgy receiver. The signal strength & quality indicators (hidden in the menu somewhere) would give some clue if you could advise what they're indicating.
If you're using Freeview and an aerial, will need more details for your location (postcode).

Therese: If you had reliable reception before switchover, the most likely explanation is that you now have too much signal. If you have a booster or amplifier, you should remove it. If not, or removing it doesn't help, try adding an attenuator.

Lichfield area, Freeview channels all available Saturday, today (13/06) only Mux 1 channels (and them poor quality) (times - 17:25 -> now (19:17). I have tried resetting twice, visually inspected the aerial for damage (none) and checked that the analogue channels are coming through on it. Previously recorded programmes on my Freeview box are playable, so there is no problem between box & TV. I see there have been engineering works - anything still going on?

Scott: Do you have a working BBC1 in the 800s? If the HD channels are present in the 800s it suggests you might be receiving an alternative region in addition to Sutton Coldfield. This could be Winter Hill which would explain the loss of MuxD (ITV4, Film4 etc). A slight increase in signal on C55 from Winter Hill would block reception of MuxD, also C55 from S/C.Try doing a factory reset to clear the channel list and rescan for channels or do a manual tune for each of the Sutton Coldfield frequencies.
