Further check:-
No BBC radio stations.
Channel 55 missing, ITV4 etc missing.
Signal strength c.10% on those channels present.

Neighbour's TV reception is OK. May be a squirrel's eaten our aerial cable!
It is only Freeview that is affected: FM radio s/s is fine.

Have just done a Freeview DVD Recorder factory reset and rescan.
This brought channel count up to 84 and Ch55 is back also ITV4 BUT s/s is near zero - Ch55 is 3 to 5% and programs unwatchable.
My suspicion is that the Sony RDR-HXD970 has a poor tuner (from web searching) and my neighbour's TV is more sensitive so is pulling in a steadier picture.
So, I'm not ruling out a transmitter fault - anyone know anything?

Richard Baguley: I'm surprised that the 970 would have a poor tuner - I've got the 995, and if anything, the tuner is far too sensitive, even with an attenuator.
There doesn't seem to be any problem with Tacolneston, according to R + T Investigation, and although your in the North Norfolk area of Freeview Doom, I suspect it might be your aerial - squirrels can be pretty nasty!

We'll be borrowing kit and trying the machine in another house tomorrow, This should determine whether it's the box or the aerial.
If it's the aerial it's probably right at the harness/connector on the aerial: FM comes into the house via the same amplifier and that's fine.
Up to now & since analog was closed s/s has been excellent - all went kaput overnight.

Have just read the last three pages of this thread: there are too maby people with the same fault for it not to be the Tacolneston transmitter.
It also occurred to me that our s/s may have dropped some time ago but only to this very low level now.
What I really need is a meter or to try my Sony machine in a neighbour's house.

Today: no digital signal at all!!!
On reflection, I had noticed some very minor pixellation over the last few weeks so s/s was probably going down.
I'm now convinced it's a transmitter fault (no 4G here).
To go from high s/s to zero is completely unacceptable so I'll cease paying the BBC tax if it's proven to be the transmitter.

Richard Baguley: I think you've just answered your own question - its not a transmitter fault.
Check your Sony with your neighbour (is that the only digital reciever you have in the house?) - if its duff, then its the Sony, but I doubt it. Once again, it sounds like the aerial.
Remember that the last three pages of comments about this transmitter are over the past seven months, and include engineering work, a high pressure system and several bouts of stormy weather, so its not unusual to get a fair number of technical problems from about 0.8m homes. If you add to that the often problemmatic nature of Freeview reception in much of the area covered, its pretty much certain.
However, since its sounds like your signal strength has been going for a while, there are no problems with the transmitter, and your nieghbour is fine, what else could it be?
At least you havn't used the phrase 'I pay my licence fee'.... :-).

I agree, Mike.
Since speaking to the rigger I took a look at the aerial.
Believe it, or not, I hadn't noticed the mast head amplifier box on the mast before! This appears not to have a cover i.e. the innards can be seen, we think.
Anyway, no signal at all on TV now - though FM is perfect.
