Paul Ryan: Loft installations are not recommended as the material in the roof and roof area can cause reception problems as well as attenuate the signal.

Often people find they are using a "signal reflection" in the roof which goes away over time as the weather changes.

The best course of action is try it if that is easy to do. However with the com7 being a Single Frequency Network AND -5.9dB weaker, it could be more prone to loft-install problems than normal.

Hi there, I'm having signal dropout problems on BBC Four HD which I understand is broadcast on Com7. My postcode is L16 0JL. My receiver shows the signal strength and quality are both 10 out of 10 but I frequently find when viewing tthat a black screen momentarily appears with the message 'no signal' for a couple of seconds at a time. I have changed all my cabling and installed a wideband aerial in the loft but it still hasn't solved the problem, I wonder if you have any advice? I was hoping to avoid a full roof installation due to the size of the aerial but is this the only solution likely to work? I have already tried a signal booster but it made no difference. It's just strange how a signal which is so good in terms of strength and quality can have these complete dropouts. It is only happening on the com7 channels.

BBC 4 dropouts seem to be common from Winter Hill I wonder who we need to report it to

Report the problem to Digital UK. It seems to be an ongoing problem at winter hill. It was fixed once but seems to be back. NB Broadcasting organisations do not read forums, faults need to be reported.

It seems at last a few more people are becoming aware of this long running fault. Please, all of you, report it to DigitalUK using the option COMPLAINT which I have found gets a fairly swift response.
Mike.

DROP OUTS ON COM7 - IMPORTANT NEWS
DROP OUTS ON COM7 - IMPORTANT NEWS
DROP OUTS ON COM7 - IMPORTANT NEWS

Today (~5pm Tuesday 9 December 2014) I have received an email from Arqiva.

They "have now identified an intermittent issue at Winter Hill. Engineers have been on site today, but have been unable to isolate the root cause at this time. Work will continue . . . . ".

I was beginning to doubt my sanity with this issue. It has taken many weeks of complaining to Ofcom, Channel Four Corporation, and the BBC. It shouldn't be this difficult. And it shouldn't be up to the viewer to keep tabs on the transmitters' outputs.

As for the Dropouts on COM7; is there a possibility that they'll all be over by Christmas (but isn't that what was said about World War 1?) !!!!

This is very encouraging news, and long overdue. Keep on complaining until we get it corrected. It also vindicates those of us who were becoming regarded as mutters.

H J Hill: If the engineers have not as yet been able to isolate the cause of the problem, one hopes that its "not" because the reason for the drop out is suspected of being caused by a feeder / connection problem at the top of the mast, as this would require a major disruption to all services in order to rectify the defect.

COM7 DROPOUTS (see earlier message on p116 at 5:12 pm)

Now Arqiva know they have a problem, they should publicly acknowledge it.

There will be people spending money trying to fix their aerials etc in the belief that it couldn't possibly be a transmission problem as it has gone on for so long.

Arqiva checked their logging equipment only because I supplied day/time/Freeview-channel data of the dropouts.
