maryam: As the signal path between Winter Hill and your location is indicating a clear line-of-sight which in theory should result in you having good reception, but to eliminate the possibility that your problem is being caused by the current wave of high pressure that is affecting reception for numerous viewers across parts of the country, it would really be prudent to make one or two local enquiries (neighbours etc) for the purpose of ascertaining as to whether or not others are also experiencing similar problems with reception from Winter Hill.
Further advice dependant on findings, although it would be of assistance if the model number of the TV involved was known, plus whether or not you are using a booster?

Thanks for all you're help so far.

I wrote the following a couple of weeks ago...
""I have exactly the same problem as Stephen
(Tuesday 2 July 2013 11:48PM, on the same channels and with approximately the same reception values (also sourced from a Humax HDR-FOX T2), it is also on all the reception devices (4xTV, 1xHumax PVR & 1xDTV USB stick for laptop reception)
The only difference is that I live in north Manchester. The aerial is pointing in the direction of Winter Hill and is not obscured in any way as I live on top of a hill.""
The problem is now resolved.
I recently received an 800MHz filter free of charge from 'at800' as my area is possibly going to be affected by the new 4G signals. I had to fit the filter in the loft where the TV signal amplifier/distributor is sited. I have not touched it for years and the input plug was very heavily oxidised (as were the output plugs - they are all good quality aluminium plugs)and the plug was difficult to remove. When I finally removed the plug I decided to renew it and also to renew two of the output plugs and to clean the rest of them that were in reasonable condition.
I now have good reception on all channels, although channel 49 is still showing a much lower signal level compared to all the other channels - low 30% for ch49, compared to high 50% for the rest.

ATV aerial of Sheffield(/www.aerialsandtv.com) sell brass plugs to solve that problem, might be worth getting some. I also wonder if the pc tracks inside your aerial amp are also corroded as in South Trafford I get levels of around 77% from a loft aerial on a Humax Fox T2. Although 30% sounds much lower than 50% you must remember that the signal strength meters on domestic devices aren't very linear so it may be telling you that levels in general are rather poor. Try bypassing the amp and feed the aerial directly to the cable feeding the Humax and see if the signal rises, if it is better the amp is faulty, if it gets worse I'm afraid you may have an aerial problem.

Thanks for the reply Anthony
When I had the problem I took the laptop with the USB tuner stick up into the loft and plugged it directly into the line from the aerial and still had the same problem.
There was no oxidation of the either copper signal wire or earth screening when I changed or cleaned the plugs, just surface oxidation of the aluminium plugs.

maryam: If you can receive ITV1 or ITV3 then without even having to check I can say you are not being affected by any 4G testing that may or may not be taking place.
What to try depends on whether or not (1) BBC is seen in the programme guide, if it is but selecting it results in a blank screen then go into your TV's set up menu and select "signal information" and making a note of the strength / quality indications seen, as signal levels should be indicated even on a blank screen so long as (1) BBC is being seen in the programme guide.
However if (1) BBC is NOT indicated in the guide then once again go into the set up menu and select "DTV manual tuning" and enter mux Ch50 (Winter Hills BBC) into the box, but do NOT press search before having made a note of the indications (strength / quality) seen, THEN you can press search or scan and observing if any BBC channels are found.
I suspect that your problem is simply being caused by the BBC mux being received at a level under that required to produce a picture, and if it is then dependant on the results of the test (indications seen) you may well get over the problem by purchasing a behind the set booster.

Is there any way I can get rid of the intrusive advert for 'search the electoral roll', 'top 10 HDTV's', 'West Ridge Academy', etc, which is superimposed on the map at the top of the page?
