The era of binge-watching TV shows could be coming to an end

While releasing shows episode by episode, week by week, is quite normal for traditional TV channels, it's not what we've come to expect from streaming services - and particularly from Netflix, where whole seasons of popular shows are dropped on the platform at once for viewers to inhale in one sitting. Advertisement 44 of the best Netflix series to binge watch right now Mihir Haria-Shah, head of broadcast at Total Media, predicts that as more streaming services become available, offering consumers more choice, they will have to work harder to keep subscribers interested. - www.wired.co.uk

8K FAQ: Our top questions about 8K answered by Samsung

Recently we were invited to the Samsung QA Labs in New Jersey, to get a closer look at its new Q950R 8K QLED TV and get an in-depth explanation of how exactly how it uses an AI-based quantum processor to upscale content to 8K. The visit, while certainly educational, raised a number of questions about how many people actually want to buy 8K TVs. So, in the midst of metaphorically dissecting their TVs to help us understand what makes them tick, Samsung's engineers also gave us the rundown on why they believe the TV market is ready for an 8K explosion and how 8K might fit together with other new screen technology. Panasonic first built an 8K TV back in 2012, and recently joined the 8K Association with Samsung to set guidelines for 8K hardware and content so it's safe to say it will be hopping back into the 8K fray soon. - www.techradar.com

BBC using strong-arm tactics over iPlayer, say independent producers

The BBC has been accused of trying to strong-arm independent TV producers into extending the availability of their shows on the iPlayer from 30 days to one year without paying millions in additional licensing fees. More Bodyguards and Love Islands needed as UK viewers desert TV

The scale of the challenge UK broadcasters face in the streaming era has been thrown into stark relief by a new report, which estimates that 34 extra series of the BBC hit Bodyguard - or 14 more Love Islands - would have needed to air last year to make up for the drop in traditional TV viewing as audiences flock to rivals including Netflix, Amazon and YouTube. The report, by the media regulator Ofcom, highlights the huge growth in popularity of streaming services in the UK. The number of subscribers to the three most popular - Netflix, Amazon and Sky's Now TV - leapt by almost a quarter last year to 19.1m. Nearly half of UK homes now have a subscription streaming service, a significant increase on the 39 that did in 2017, with many households paying for two or more. - www.theguardian.com

From Trinny and Susannah to Donald Trump, reality TV has ushered in an age of spite

Ps on the Digital, Culture, Media and sport select committee are asking how reality TV became so spiteful that two Love Island contestants, and one participant of the cancelled Jeremy Kyle Show, are dead. Of course it is too late to mourn the death of courtesy – and empathy – in public discourse; this is, in every sense, a post-mortem. Those same MPs may walk a gauntlet of screams as they go to work. Disagreement without rancour has become archaic, even semi-mythical. The MPs heard a submission called Belligerent Broadcasting from the academics Angela Smith and Michael Higgins (who I name to be polite). They named Trinny Woodhall and Susannah Constantine, two semi-parodic Sloane Rangers who... - www.telegraph.co.uk

Broadcast TV streaming app Locast had hoped that qualifying itself as a not-for-profit might be enough to avoid the wrath of the major networks and the same demise as Aereo.
