Ofcom proposes radical shakeup of UK broadcasting

In a report on how public service broadcasting should adapt to the age of online viewing and Smart TVs, Ofcom also suggested the rules governing the public service remit for broadcasters including the BBC should be radically overhauled, potentially allowing them to fulfil their obligations online instead of through traditional channels. If its suggestions are implemented, they would represent the most radical change in the rules governing broadcasting in the UK since streaming services began to challenge traditional outlets. - www.theguardian.com

Ofcom: BBC services such as iPlayer an afterthought for younger audiences

Younger audiences are treating BBC services such as iPlayer as an afterthought, according to a warning from Ofcom, as the media regulator revealed that people aged 16-34 spend less than an hour a day consuming BBC content. Ironically, Ofcom found that while younger audiences consume less BBC content, they seem to have a more favourable attitude to the corporation than their parents and grandparents. - www.theguardian.com

Netflix to spend $1bn in UK in 2020 on TV shows and films

The spend has been invested in making more than 50 TV shows and films in 2020, against the backdrop of a UK production shutdown for a number of months earlier this year due to coronavirus restrictions. The UK has become firmly established as the most important international production hub for Netflix, which is estimated to be spending 17bn on making and licensing TV shows and films this year, with the British budget second only to its home market in the US. Around a third of all the productions Netflix makes in Europe, for its 200 million-strong global subscriber base, are made in the UK. The binge-watching model pioneered by Netflix requires a substantial pipeline of content and the UK has taken centre stage as a production location. - www.theguardian.com

Switzerland getting ready to turn off FM radio RadioToday

A session dedicated to the energy consumption and distribution of DAB generated significant interest and several questions, as the BBC presented their recent study indicating that DAB has the lowest energy footprint per device per hour compared to AM, FM, DTV and IP. Interesting DAB network case studies were given for a national rollout, regional and local or community radio, while 5G's potential to support radio was also considered in a presentation from the EBU. They took a closer at the rollout status of DAB across a number of key markets. Digital listening now accounts for 60 of all listening - 70 of which is on DAB, and a Digital Radio and Audio Review will help assess consumer habits and support radio in the wider audio market. - radiotoday.co.uk
