BSkyB profits rise despite slowdown in subscriber growth - Media - guardian.co.uk

BSkyB has succeeded in cross-selling its services to existing customers. BSkyB, which was on the brink of being taken over by its largest shareholder, News Corporation, until the phone-hacking scandal at News of the World scuppered the deal, exceeded most analyst targets. The company said that operating profit of 327m, a 32 year-on-year increase, was boosted by a 39m payout by News Corporation for breaking off the sale and 7m in costs for advisory fees. - guardian.co.uk

BBC - Research and Development: Dual Screen Experiences: the Secret Fortune Pilot and the Sync API

In that earlier blog post, I mention that technologies exist that are already being used to synchronise media on mobile devices to television programmes, such as audio fingerprinting and watermarking, video fingerprinting and watermarking and delivering synchronisation information via the Internet. Our most significant contribution to the work has been an API to permit the developers of dual-screen applications to ignore the details of specific synchronisation technologies. It provides a standard interface, behind which any number of information sources may be working individually or together to provide the application with information about what programme the user is watching if any, and what events are occurring in it that might trigger synchronised behaviour. - bbc.co.uk

One of the things BT has done to make its Vision service more marketable is create a new logo and colour scheme that will aim to forge the service a distinct identity, separate from associations between BT and outdated terrestrial television services. The new logo features an ambiguous triangular shape that falls somewhere between the V in Vision and the play button on a TV remote control. BBC - Radio 4 and 4 Extra Blog: Radio 4's longwave transmitter and cuts to BBC radio

The Chancellor makes his statement in the Commons, the Government's PR machine goes into overtime spreading the good news, and then gradually, as detailed scrutiny begins, rather less positive headlines emerge. To begin with it seemed as if Radio 4 had got off unscathed since it was to suffer no reduction in its 'content spend', whereas Radio 5 live for example, was being cut by 7.5 per cent. The Corporation accepts that the overall number of BBC producers will drop, but says the assistant producer total will go up, resulting in an overall net reduction in staff in the Radio production department of five per cent. - bbc.co.uk

Radio cuts a disaster for 'localism' and community work - UK news - guardian.co.uk

The Government's new 'community organiser' scheme has just announced its first 47 recruits in a 15 million programme yet at the same time, the biggest community organisation in the country is facing walloping cuts. Good luck to the pioneers organised by Locality, the latest in a line of arms length attempts to galvanise social action, but they will be hard put to it to match BBC local radio. It is ironic that promotion of the community organisers kicks off by saying that they are starting work 'from Cockermouth in Cumbria to Penzance in Cornwall.' BBC - Research and Development: BBC R

The BBC has about a million hours of video and audio content, plus a wealth of documents, including the original scripts. Most of this content is still on magnetic tape, film, records or paper and so needs to be digitised and made searchable before it can be contributed to the Digital Public Space which was the subject of a recent technology podcast from the Guardian. Research is continuing to extend the digitisation process to other types of video tape and to develop automated methods to detect picture and sound faults to ensure good quality digitisation and to assist restoration. - bbc.co.uk
