Britbox expansion, podcast moves disabil…

Wade decision for royal Estates in general but media companies in particular song push back for the media companies taking the progressive you which also is the view of the majority of America isn't it? And then I got two companies have promised their staff look after them in states that are criminalising straight away.

What is the travel time to state of the needed to but they were alone? I mean a lot of many companies have come out and said that Netflix paramount comcast Warner Brothers Discovery Sony still waiting to see what Amazon says but these companies that I mentioned her boss said we will find this is part of healthcare that this is considered healthcare and also on the show Bank after little while away podcast on audio critic Caroline Crampton hi Caroline hello.

Thank you for having me no worries in your podcast this week have been mulling over the dark side of true Crime did you unravel any mysteries about the genre myself and my guest came to the conclusion that there isn't really such a thing as quote ethical true Crime perhaps to be it is perhaps possible to be an ethical consumer of true Crime I think by which we mean not getting to drawn into the Gorey fact of murders and remembering that.

Are still human beings involved may be without always the right amount of thought I suppose I think that's definitely what bothers me about it is the the rapid turnaround that and collapse of any sense of of cycle to it that can happen and they can be a true Crime podcast about it within a couple of months now rather than there being a sense that we're looking at historical or cold cases, where perhaps everybody involved is long as it can still be happening when the podcast helps coming out yes, well if I make a a link from one thing to another landing on Hulu this week the second series only murders in the building which is a show which of these done well in the streaming world and lots of streaming news this week including news from britbox.

That's the strimmer run by the

Sian ITV announce and moved to a to Regent structure with more of a focus on us expansion in a bid to become the global leader in British content over that way I can britbox established itself as a streaming for Stephen a tier 2 streaming Force I think so, they want to be very British so the ideas always been with her bottle of the British home for a home for British drama home for British crime home for British comedy xcetera because it has two strong characters in in the face of BBC like to be that they also are getting content from Channel 5 there also getting counting from 4 it is I think the change is that in terms of the UK is kind of being pushed into this new ITV X thing there's rumours rumours to be is launching in November cherry pick the stuff they want for the new ITV extrovert.

So that was kind of a big change then the to Reading structure.

I think is what s is the CEO is making this is the way to try to cover the world the US the rest of the world, but I'm still leaving out markets like the UK where I see me is going to take the lead there and the BBC is a different approach will at work at a very big presentation to producers and this is what he wants to be British but we're looking for everything you know I could be whatever you want.

So we'll see that's where we are now with the Slimming World you know the cost of producing really stand out content just continue to go up so it all comes down to you know how much are you going to pay and what conditions will you get to stream competition for britbox streaming competition for them? Have they got anybody should have in their vertical that.

Something similar role, is it a good space for them to to be in to build a market? Well? I mean I mean if you think about it.

You know there's lots of global streamers are there on Netflix Disney so they've got lots of competition all of those companies British content so it's a question of you know what content they will be able to continue to acquire and how old will it be obviously they're going to lean into detail of contacts have some of the classic British shows on service commission new stuff, but I think now I want to go to have some kind of long till but you also need to have those pimples something that says hey come look at me.

This is where you want to subscribe.

You know what this week.

It's a comparative space now.

I mean there's no kidding about this is not everybody's going to survive but I think if you've got a USB you can somehow stick to you and

Is very clear that they are British flavour content that will it work I think so well britbox.com has been hiring as well.

She played Carrie Ball who's Priestley nbcuniversal Discovery as the cheek of acquisitions and commercial officer.

Just a small job there.

She says she says that there's going to be a slave commissions allowance including 12 mystery and 12 crime shows per year Caroline you like a little bit of crime is more in this area a good thing.

Do you think these TV companies can also look to podcasts furthermore their content as well? I think the podcast the TV pipeline is pretty well established across the industry now and a lots of streamers and other production companies see podcast a low-cost way of testing out IP it's much cheaper to make something is a podcast series see if it develops an audience and then you can take it to the screen if you feel that there's the justification for it, I think.

The idea that britbox is Leaning into mysteries and crime and particular sounds like it makes perfect sense to me and it's totally from the Americans I talk to you about half of the supporters for podcast based in the States I think they are the ideal people for britbox.

They want the classic British cosy crime Midsomer Murders Inspector Morse things like they ask Evans with you lorry that's exactly the kind of content.

I think is associated with Britain even if it's not all we watch and produce here and therefore it's going to be a really strong which genre for britbox on the train to acquire more American subscribers Midsomer Murders I mean you can do that is probably 100 episodes to watch but also a Caroline news this week about a death in paradise off as well from the BBC it is a hugely popular genre isn't it is hugely popular and this idea of franchising within it is a well-trodden path in I think of we had.

Moss and then we had Louis and then we had and ever and ever think he is now coming to an end.

I'm just waiting for the 4th Inspector Morse property to emerge zombie like his mother his mother-in-law and newsagents.

He met once you know whoever, but it definitely seems to work though doesn't let you know rather than trying to bring people to an entirely new set of characters in the new place spinning Out of something.

They already know and love absolutely works.

So you know why I stopped doing it as well the people that invented binge-watching with Netflix that was one of its big thing is dropping whole series in one go there seems to be a bit of a retreat from that recently this quite closely Netflix dropping it all at once they backtracking.

It's really interesting to see that.

Let's hope it on on something that's been a major USP for Netflix from the beginning and something if they said they never thought of abandon the new Stranger things.

Dropping a big portion of it, but they're holding back a couple of the episodes till the next week in the next week and it's a fascinating to see this because he was such a USB but clearly what's happening is competition is getting them and you're seeing the more traditional extremism what I mean by that the Legacy broadcasting companies are getting it like the Disney's are saying you know what we're going to schedule the stuff were you know we're not going to drop it on once.

We're gonna keep people interested wearing a drop it week by week.

I did it with Mandalorian they done it with something come up with it works.

You know actually that people are ok appointment to view hey is not a crazy idea.

So that was stop right now.

I mean they cut some work for 716 people they also obviously you're pivoting to advertising which again was another.

We will never do advertising.

Lol maybe a subscription service that you know what changed but last week's weather in kanata.

Can Lyon vs.

The big big advertising fast together and talks about where the man is coming in his garden who wants it and who's the CEO of course as We Know Netflix we're looking at Stark and who's going to do it maybe do a partnership with Alexa Google maybe comcast we might even work with Roku and I mean it was also like a work.

You were going into the average so big changes nothing stays the same forever even for the disruptors individual episodes vs.

Connacht dropping box sets and forecasting is always been very episodic but particularly in such a short run series that has been at have it now if people drop.

Series or doing things slightly differently do you think the telly world has trained podcast listeners that they should get their chosen a similar all you can eat wake I definitely think there is some of that Netflix effect as well that wants someone find something that they're interested in there's a case the same give it to them all at once so that you then are there queue for the next day or week or however long.

It will take them to get through because then you you don't risk them being Broadway by something else and losing their attention.

They never come back which is relatively recent thing in podcasting really if you've been doing it for over a decade you're so accustomed to the episodic with them and the whole idea that it's all about retention and building up that relationship's of people come back like appointment viewing appointment listening then your Wednesday mornings or Saturday evenings or whenever you always come out so the box that mindset does feel quite alien to podcasting still but I think the biggest indicator the biggest thing everyone was.

I was when cereal comes out in 2014 is episode.

It's famously episode it then when s-town comes out it all comes out at once every single episode all dropped in one go one day.

I think that was really the signal to podcasting that they could do that too.

I think that makes the Colony maybe is something that we might see a bit more import cost of people perhaps experiment a bit with a little more get Sharon wondering have been trying this for a long time with their apps in a you've always been able to get all of a Wandering series on wondering plus.

Where is if you are listening for free sleep plus also famously did that after the success of slow burn can get the whole thing in one go no ads and I think it's all part isn't of having ways for different types of consumers to support you if they want to you never transform a big percentage of your audience into that kind of subscriber, but just by having the facility it means you're taking money from people who otherwise wouldn't have a way to give it to you.

I think as a 1 of a portfolio of strategies and it makes no sense to you evolve all of the different business models is the CEO of Disney this is Bob chap who stepped in after Bob igers departure give me something Katie said his contract extended for three years, but a few rumblings about him a blemish-free start as it is more than just a rambling I mean just look at this price.

The first one was basically just the Disney start protesting so you must have something about this so they did with the for the governor Ron desantis to is very right wing so that's the problem there now thinking of changing what does need text like and their powers and they've got no they're big.

The second thing was you know that your hands in there was a big smile and off between Disney and her about when they dropped the black widow here before it was a huge Rift there.

Can it looks like it wasn't really good with dealing account and then everything was Peter rice.

Which was a very well regarded executive insight into the possible successor to barbie girl and he certainly was basically like go vs.

Waving which I talk to a tab that also an interesting thing.

I think he made in my opinion.

I think probably most people would agree with that one, but it's a certain amount price but with having to have is bored actually say that we back you Bob but yes this country has been renewed for three years the board at the moment.

Is it behind them? So that's that's good for organisation.

Cancel of slightly bumbling start as well.

Just take awhile for these people at the top to get a handle on the monster that they're in charge of that question as it's been there for you.

So you know I don't think that's a good excuse for him.

I really think you know I'm coming the top person is a different job if you're running a even a big Division so yes, there's there's that I also just think it's a very bold the time right now and between the particles that are going on in the US and the fact of the strimmer economy that says getting more difficult in the front of the stock market.

I put a lot of pressure on the streaming business looking to the disease streaming has been the saviour of the company that you had covid you had all the parts.

Does it mean it's not but you know it's like with every big company when they do a big favour now.

It's you know he look at ITV

I'm trying to get there but now I realise it streaming is really need to be there leaning into a big time.

They're putting huge money behind it 160000000 extra and your budget from three to do streaming so I think these kind of decisions when you're a big Happy that's been doing one thing and I have to talk to another thing is no, it's not it's not easy what changes in companies and employees is another big story in the media this week the Guardians reported that any J members that reach will take part in a postal ballot for industrial action after rejective a 3% pay offer from the Caroline industrial action has been in the news from whole variety of different sectors.

Are you surprised to see this on the front pages about the front pages? Not at all.

I think the issues that are facing workers across all different sectors are the same ones that are affecting people in the media.

You know increasing cost of living energy costs all of this but then there are also some.

Local newspaper specific issues that make there's not surprising either declining leadership competition from Facebook relatively low pay for a job that now often requires a graduate degree not just an undergraduate want to have a good chance of securing yourself a slot so I think yeah all of these things makes total sense.

Why are you would reject a 3% pay offer and hold the stray kids still just at the Ballot stage, so it's not definitely going ahead but I think the again trends across the economy more broadly suggest that striking very well on the cards, Alresford help.

There's a Daily Mirror front page on fat cat pay pointing out that five chief exec sterling 86 times the average workers pay but fail to mention the reach CEO has a pretty high multiple of their average employee salary as well that can't help those industrial conversations.

I think he got a package worth 4 million.

2021 when the the average reporters earning 21000 a year in the dark there but I think the response to that has been really interesting you know the guardian report just refers to the come back from the company is just will you know the best way for local journalism to thrive is with a successful commercial model that that pay is normal in the rest of the private sector why should regional Media be any different so I think there's a kind of deeper ideological conflicts there.

What is the status of does it have some kind of special conditions in which the public interest data of some of what that media does means that it needs subsidy at can't completely open market or is it just out there and you know you get the best pay you can or will you go somewhere else that seems to be what the exact are trying to push for anyway.

Thanks both now.

Deep dive if you work in the TV industry, you might have had some chat about passports recently well these passports there to support inclusion and are an unprecedented cross-industry scheme to remove barriers for people with disabilities working in broadcasting I spoke to Sam Tatlow from.itv and Kirsty Walker Channel 4 find out what is a passport who impacts and white matters access passports came about about a year ago from a meeting at the broadcaster having with Ofcom as part of their diversity and inclusion conversations that we have and it was a commitment that we made to explore working collaboratively together on them the passports are being rolled out of the way that they're being implemented and the way that they're being use a slightly different but the purpose of the passports is to enable disabled people when they joining a broad.

To communicate their access needs and any adjustments that they might they might require in order to do their job to their best ability but the other purpose of them is to empower non-disabled colleagues at the broadcasters to have confident conversations about disability about access requirements so that they have getting a bit of a template to follow the conversation through it gives them the language to say these are the kinds of questions.

You should be having with your colleagues and is a prompt as well, so enables us as broadcasters to say to are line manager's in your team.

You should be asking them about their were they filled in a disability access passport and if there is anything you would like to share with you about it.

So that we can start the conversation.

We wanted to encourage more people to be talking about disability more people to feel comfortable and supported when have

I'm hoping that in Leeds into better inclusion and more support for disabled people when they're joining our businesses everyone wants to be helpful, but they sort of worried sometimes what they should be asked.

You shouldn't be asking and I suppose it provides a framework.

I guess forever both parties to get on with it.

When someone you going to join take the burden off of a disabled person to constantly have to self-identify and to explain time and time again what they need and engaging a conversation because I hope I haven't his passport is encouraging disable colleagues to start the conversation themselves rather than relying on disabled people to do that over Channel 4 been going for the passports is similar across the board.

Slightly different angle when we spoke to the employee resource group at Channel 4 called for purple play were quite passionate about the fact that it shouldn't just focus on disability and wanted it to the all-encompassing inclusion, so Channel 4 passport is called an inclusion and the premises basically that it's for people to talk about things that they need in order to try for requirements they need but it could be anything really we have so many different things that kind of makeup Who We Are The Pilot that we did at the end of last year some of the feedback that back for us with around people not being sure what they want.

They could use it for so giving people some examples of things that it has been used for around needing some.

Play some time to pray during the day or time off for blood tests on sperm donations, but IVF it's literally anything it's kind of conversation starters and I think people are kind of embracing the fact that it's being recognised that we do all have these things which make us different and we need to stop talking about them and sharing them in order to kind of get the changes.

I guess that we need in order to be able to drive when we're in the workplace in December at ITV about how it's worked at Channel 4 how they gone down at ITV on the day of disabled people's on the 3rd of December we started to roll out positive confident.

I didn't know how to have this conversation before hand and this is made me feel like ITV is a place that cares about this kind of thing and and I feel quite supported all day with 6-months and we've not done an evaluation.

Just yet so once that has happened will review of what the feedback is more generally across.

It is following on from the Vue ITV4 my employee resource group was that actually but they wanted a and more focused peace around disability for the moment.

So that we can actually Focus his mind and focus everybody on on disability and they said earlier.

We're all at different stages of her journey, and I'm sure at one stage.

We will get to that place where everybody feels that there are more able to talk about themselves that we can support with but at the moment key Focus for this passport specific things about disability a number of years.

MBE for services to people with disabilities at the Jubilee say congratulations for that mention there about you different HR systems and they going in different directions was it a difficult number of meetings to get everybody else in the same page or will people sort of there or there abouts in different places conversations and ensuring that we were taking everybody along on the ride with us with really important.

I think that ability for us to be flexible, so that each broadcaster could I'm in bed.

He's in a way that felt relevant to them was really important in order to be able to come and get this work pick started.

I guess what's important to know is that these passports after internal staff so those two are working within channel forum.

Within ITV and the other broadcasters they're not use currently for freelancers, so when we're thinking about how we can support freelancers and those working within production.

That's the next step of the work and that is something that is that scope of work is being worked through buy packs at the moment and how we can support are disabled freelancers working in production because that is actually quite a key piece of this and it's the next step of the work because I think as I said earlier.

You know the representation of Disabled People is so low and that is a particular issue within production and it's something that we're all very aware of so I think that next roll out of it will be key.

What's really great at the moment is that people's Minds are off ok fighting people from underrepresented groups and giving them opportunities.

I guess the challenge on the next step for the industry ensuring that those people who are coming into the industry are supported.

Able to take those next steps and stay in the industry and make their way up the career ladder to.

that was Kirsty walker from Channel 4 in San Paulo from ITV you can hear more of our chat including my disability and inclusion passports could be a model for the wider Media industry on our patreon page also whatever sets, are you working in a picture on go and come and subscriber patron.com Media pod as well as getting access to extra knowledge information and I interview you'll be supporting the production of the show which is very important to us will be like after celebrate summer with Mamma Mia take a trip down the aisle with irresistibly funny feel-good tail that's all around the world and where in London featuring songs of ABBA

You already know you get a love it podcast still here with me.

I'll Caroline and Kate of course the main stick around to see who will win the media quiz Crown in just a moment the first move in the world of podcasting was announced end of last week's UK based audio studio novel has made an inferential higher making Julie Shapiro from radiotopia.

The executive creative director we had Julie on the shower few weeks ago.

It was not to break the big news on the media podcast using in a podcast about isn't it Caroline to have Julie move across played with the middle of the last decade wave of podcasting.

You know as an independent podcast collective radio table was incredibly influential.

That's what a lot of people from outside the US

Add to that kind of model where podcast could be heavy getting a successful, but they could also created could retain their own IP and all of that.

I think there's a bit of unravelling radiotopia to the end of some question marks over their responses to Black lives matter and the diversity of the podcast as they chose to work with but should be really definitely still has the size or reputation involved.

I think it's interesting for what it says about novels ambition that they've chosen to bring her on at this point and they made some other hi as well that I think very much so that they're they're trying to bring in Tallinn that's really in bed the history of the podcast industry that they're not newcomers.

Essentially do you think that sort of elevated themselves to be kind of the top of the queue of uk-based podcast companies.

Do you think there are Great White Hope I think the way there? They seem to be moving in a business sense is interesting to see I'm also interested to see whether.

That kind of more American aggressive acquisitional attracting international Talent month does that work does that produce effects in this different Media environment? I am slightly less convinced of their contents over.

I don't feel like they've had a real banger of a hit yet.

Which is just unequivocally identified with them and they make their name in the way that to go out to a podcast like slow burn for instance.

You know that the first series of slow burn really really should have ripped the podcast ecosystem and really puts creators on the map.

Don't know if not we'll have had one of those yet and so I think they need to be me to basically to backup these business moves.

They need to have some editorial.

That's of walk the walk or hits are everything I will keep an eye on novel see I have a do whether they jump into the acquisition space or whether they have more hires or more heads before we get there so obviously the most important thing is to think about the media quiz.

This week is entitled Media deals.

It's almost like we think about where are the stories go Media deals to describe a story in which a media company is making a bowl deal.

Just buzzing with your mum if you know the answer to the question, so Kate you will say Kate and Caroline you say Caroline right here we go question number one audio streaming provider Napster isn't planning a comeback another one but centred around which new technology is nft in crypto.

Hey purchased by hydeline Capital Partners and basically is into cryptocurrency.

This is where he's all about essentially vehicle to build on this whole move and I'm going to do a

The symbol dollar sign Napster free music in this is yet another payment for them something.

I've been reading about recently you know there's lots of lots of money being weighed.

You're on it in my opinion for a piece of content.

Is is a good thing in the sense that you know that I'll be worth something so if you have Pantera IP and you want nfts for the speak.

That's probably a good mood when I think that I've been saying to me.

Please get your arms around.

It's coming out.

It's going to be something.

We just don't know when it's going to actually make sure but Masters shift is quite quite amazing everything lfts are all a bit snake-oil.

I think technology is interesting isn't it? And someone will reinvent it up put it in the right place at some point.

Hindi film company A24 has signed a deal with which US-based podcast in Fareham today and contents Caroline who is it is pushkin Industries and Malcolm Gladwell skin is a primarily audio first company formed around the author Malcolm Gladwell they done what they call some other book first deals in the password writers like Michael Lewis and now they've just extended I suppose they've already been participated in a little bit in that sort of cross-media pipeline from other forms and this deal will just further assist them in doing that to you to appoint each.

I'm finally number 3 Channel 4 is preparing to sign a deal with a TNT keep what on earth for the next five years Kate Kate what are they doing a deal for which is interesting as we know it is in the midst of what to say.

The government about when they should be part of it shouldn't be privatised the government finds its push back and said that they will be privatised the seem to be going ahead the Channel 4 management is decided to try to renew their contract for the news program.

I think for another 3 years and for some people when they're in the government.

Why are they doing that are just trying to make child for you no more difficult for an abaya.

Well my mind Channel 4 news is very important.

So whoever buys.

It should be trying to keep Channel 4 News you know the way it is interesting about this.

Is that a lot of people are starting to come out of the woodwork and say yeah, it is not just in my mind company said they might look at it and Idris Elba we know is an actor who also has a production company called.

He said he wouldn't get it make a bed so it's an interesting interesting moment in the Channel 4.

I think it's all about politics, but we'll see you.

I think you just would be a good custodian of channel for someone like it yourself a progressive celebrity having control of it would be fascinating for what it does for Media relations with the government.

They would definitely be a curveball well.

Well Kate you in the media quiz you got 2 questions right there and I will exchange those answers for tokens in the new media quiz nft market place you can put them in your wallet with only the climbing bitcoin and I'm sure it will make you a fortune Caroline and thanks for yesterday Caroline where people stop with what you're doing the best.
