I have automatically retuned my T.V. and again I am now piking up Welsh channels, I want to receive channels from the Mendip transmitter. I have followed instructions to manually retune but it hasn't worked. Can you help please?

Thank you.

Judith Motler:

To be abke to assist we need to know where you live, so please provide your full post code, or that of a very nearby public building (post office, shop, etc). Then we can see what the reception conditions for both Mendip and Wenvoe are at your location.

With that information, we could also determine whether Mendip is the ideal transmitter for you.

Meanwhile, you should manually tune your TV to the channels used by Mendip. These are shown near the top of this page. They are: 49, 54, 58, 48, 56, 52, 51 (local Bristol only), 33 and 35.

Judith Motler: Hi, Judith. It is very important in your particular case, for your tv aerial to be pointing at the Mendip transmitter, which is South of Bristol, East-South-East of Weston-Super-Mare and West-South-West of Bath. What you do NOT want is for your aerial to be pointing towards Wenvoe, which is West-South-West of Cardiff. It would seem that you need to ensure that your aerial is being directed towards the Mendip transmitter BEFORE you attempt another re-tune, whether manual or automatic! I also concur with Mike P in that you ought to determine whether, indeed, Mendip is the best transmitter for you at your location, and to determine this a postcode of your location or of a nearby shop, post office or garage is needed. Even the name of a village or the district within a town or city can help us to determine your most likely transmitter, which, as Mike surmises, may not, in fact, be Mendip at all! One other thing - not all tvs are capable of having a manual re-tune done. The first priority is to choose the best transmitter, then aim the aerial at it, then carry out a tune. Richard, Norwich.

We live at BA5 3QS (Mendip transmitter). Our quite new JVC television has a problem with signals. About three or four times a year we have a message that comes up saying 'loading application' and then a pile of other blurp. We retune the television and that usually works (although we do have the same problem as Judith Motler above so we don't put the aerial in until we are about half way through the search and that excludes the Welsh programmes).

Now though when I retune the problem keeps repeating in that we find the channels we want but the 'loading application' keeps appearing. We have to call the engineer out about twice a year at the cost of 40 a time to get rid of the message. I don't know if this happens when they have been fiddling around with whatever bits of kit they have at the Mendip transmitter, but it is driving us nuts. HELP!

Louise Tully: Hi, Louise. Firstly, whatever they do at the Mendip transmitter cannot affect messages such as the 'loading application' message popping up on your JVC tv set. In order to offer you some more help, we need to know the date of purchase of the set, along with its model name and model number. Once we have this information, we can research your particular JVC tv set and hopefully give you some further guidance. The model number is imperative if we are to assist you. If you don't have the instruction booklet, look on the back of the set. Hoping to hear from you again within the next few minutes, Richard in Norwich.

Thanks for the help. The date on the back of the television is Jan 2011 but I think we bought it some time after that. The model is LT260DE1BJ

David Pirie:

There is no reported problem with transmissions from Mendip currently and my reception of COM8 in Trowbridge is the same as previously, giving no problems at all.

I suggest you check what the received signal strength is by checking on your TV set what strength and quality it is reporting. Your User Manual should tell you how to do that if you have not done it before.

If the strengths are in the range of 65% to 85% on Channel 33 then check your aerial connections as they sometimes work lose and cause such problems. If in doubt, change the cables where possible.

MikeP: HI MIke

I had an aerial engineer who told me he thought there was a problem with the signal which was dropping in and out (though he also said I must have picked it up from another transmitter which is clearly not the case) . If I manually tune to the channels to check strength it varies from 65 or better to no signal. It is possible to watch but you lose the signal about every minute for a few seconds? Is it possible I am getting some local interference on this frequency . |I should add there has been no previous problem, I had all channels until recently and I have two aerials though now both TVs on both aerials will not auto-tune to Frequency 33 ( you said com 8 but I believe it is com 7). Channels affected include BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBeebies HD and CBS Drama as well as a favourite of mine Talking Pictures TV.

I guess it sounds like single frequency interference?

Any further advice you can give me is welcome. Thank you.

.
