Regional News and ITV1 fears
Ofcom published a review of the UK's television news services today, and there are some fears for the future of regional TV news.
This comes on the day that ITV1 has to face a list of failures with many figures down - share down another 5.4%, and share of advertising shots down by 5.6% to 32.3%.
Ofcom's review shows that regional news could and should do better. On ITV only "North West Tonight" has increased share of viewing (2006 vs 2001) by 23%, and for the BBC only South Today (7%) and Look East (6%) have increased.
However, overall share for the regional news programmes on ITV is just 20% overall (and in Yorkshire and Midlands) with disappointing figures for London (12%), West (13%), Wales (15%), South West (15%), North East (17%). The BBC regional programmes average 28% with the poorest shares in Border (16%), North East (20%) and London (24%).
